View Full Version : cpanel xp /Enhost - SPAM
Anyone else get that CpanelXP spam from Enhost? Some crap about how it made them a success to use their new theme and that we should try it? How much respect am I supose to give these clowns when they spam the hell out of people?
Yeah, I got it too. Sent it to their ISP and their web host as a spam complaint.
I got it too. Yet another to add to the filter.
michaeln 06-02-2002, 07:11 PM Yup I got it as well.
alchiba 06-02-2002, 07:36 PM And I was actually enjoying a spam-free Sunday. Until now. :(
BurstCSM 06-02-2002, 07:42 PM Got it too, P.S. what's a spam free day like? never had one :bawling: Now I feel left out

Well, I came very close to be able to tell you. I had the champagne out and everything. :D
BurstCSM 06-02-2002, 07:50 PM If you don't check e-mail all day (not that any of us can really stay away that long) does it count?
alchiba 06-02-2002, 07:53 PM Similar question to "If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it, does it still make a sound?"

Maybe, but then the next day you log on will be one of the worse spam days you have due to the spam building up in your box.
I just love getting spam from other hosts trying to offer me some type of hosting service.... Hey, why dont we all spam each other and try to sell the same things that the person sells.
<edit> On a related note, I actually got an apology from Enhost for the spam after I sent them a message myself.
MGCJerry 06-02-2002, 08:47 PM Spam free days, those are wonderful. :D
Heck, I'm lucky if I even get any mail in a week, with all my email addys combined! :eek2: But it could be my filters... Yeah... Thats what it is.... My filters :D
Aussie Bob 06-02-2002, 09:06 PM Is it spam when someone PMs us with their services too? Cause I got a few dedicated server suppliers PMing me with their services etc. I'll mention no names. Just wondered if this was acceptable behaviour around these parts?? :)
Roy@ENHOST 06-02-2002, 09:06 PM Hey really sorry for the email guys!!!
I guess it might be viewed as a bad move for many people.
I got some good responses though but that is not the concern here.I am here to apologise to you guys for this Email:
http://www.enhost.com/cp/pages/productinfo.htm
I really feel quite sad that it is now classified under same category as those Viagra, Casino and Get Rich Quick emails.
:(
I myself receive lots of Emails from the above category everyday no matter how hard I tried to prevent it. I know how it feels.
But whatever it is. Here is my public apology.
Incognito 06-02-2002, 09:24 PM Does that mean you sent it intentionally? Or someone else did? You are sorry? Or, You are sorry, some got angry? What did you mean?
BrianF 06-02-2002, 09:49 PM I think what he's trying to say is:
He screwed up and didn't mean to offend anyone by sending these e-mails, he did not think that they would be considered as SPAM.
That's my take ;-)

Roy@ENHOST 06-02-2002, 10:14 PM Hi Brian,
That is exactly what I am trying to say.
Thank you for explaining on my behalf.
TimPD 06-02-2002, 10:21 PM WOW, I didn't get one I feel leftout LOL.

I feel left out, I didn't get one:bawling:
Someone forward me one (roly2002au@yahoo.com.au)
Incognito 06-02-2002, 11:24 PM A Good Question...
First, thanks for your follow up response and for having the courage to come here and answer.
If he had sent individualized personalized emails to each of the same people, would that have been SPAM and as offensive?
Upon further consideration, I do not believe I probably would have been offended to receive this email...a directed email to a fellow host who he knew used CPanel, although I know technically it was SPAM.
How many did he send? Thousands, or Hundreds, or just a few?
One major mistake was not including a quick, easy way to be removed from your list.
So, guess I'm saying...yes, he was wrong...but, I probably wouldn't have been too upset (mostly ignore the SPAM I receive unless repeated and real abusive)...but, also, as a host, if he had been a client and I received a complaint, I would definitely have had to look further, evaluate, and warn.
So, guess you learned a hard lesson....

But whatever it is. Here is my public apology. What I'd like to know is where you got the email addy's?
I would have not even gotten angry if the e-mail had been sent to anywhere other than where it was sent.. which was our support address. Clogging a hosts support address with spam is probably the worst thing to do.. also you'd think a better place to send would be to the owners addy, since they are the decision makers.. not the techs. Please remove my support@ addy from your list/address book ASAP (you can match my domain to the URL in my profile) - would email asking but your spam has long since been nuked.
Aussie Bob, unless you've made a post seeking out offers, any offer that is PM'ed to you is spam.. it's unsolicited. Contact a mod and tell them of the offense. :stickout
Roy@ENHOST 06-03-2002, 12:07 AM Very sorry guys,
No such thing as Email list here. I basically surfed the net to see if any host out there use Cpanel and might benefit from the theme and just email them.
I didnt include the 'remove from Email list' link cause there is none and the thing is you will only receive it once. I do not expect to send you the same message once every week. I think once is enough unlike the Viagra,Government Grant, Fake University Degree, Casino and Porn Emails I get almost everyday.
Sorry for any hard feelings.
alchiba 06-03-2002, 12:50 AM No hard feelings on my part, really. At least your efforts were targeted (taking the trouble to ferret out your own contacts) and relevant. Certainly more relevant than the spam about a bust-enhancing herbal supplement that arrived about 5 minutes after yours.
Anyone want me to forward that one? :D
HostingDirect 06-03-2002, 10:01 AM I personally do not see where his targeted one time email was a problem. I do not really need his product but I am not offended by his actions specifically because he clearly identified who he represents and it appeared to be targeted when I read the message.
I have a big problem with spammers that send non-personalized non-targeted adds from bogus address's and do not clearly identify them self.
I know my opinion may not be popular but I think folks are being a little hard on Roy. Everyone make an occasional poor judgment call, I am sure we all have in the past once or twice :)

Yeah, I don't really know anymore what is spam and what isn't spam. The waters are murky to say the least. If I email someone that I see from this forum and make a JV proposal [do networking], then that is technically called spam. ?!?!?!?
If we can't contact one another [off forum] and do business, then that's a little crazy. [not talking about prospecting for clients]
I've had dealings with Roy through the CPanel skin I purchased, and have found him to be great to deal with and always willing to help. He was a pleasure to do business with. :)

I've had dealings with Roy through the CPanel skin I purchased, and have found him to be great to deal with and always willing to help. He was a pleasure to do business with. :) If you e-mail someone from this forum that hasn't posted interest in the subject (hasn't posted a thread asking for this service, etc.) then it is considered spam (its unsolicited). If you really want to market to the people on this forum, the only way that it would not be spam is to follow the forum guidelines and post the offer in either the Web Hosting Special Offers forum or the Related Offers and Request forum. Those forums were made to stop the forum users from mailing members... which if I got an unsolicited mail from a member here I'd consider it spam and mail a complaint to the mods.
The only thing that I found somewhat rude from the email recieved from Roy was that it was sent to my domains support email address.. also, if his emails were so targeted.. he would have seen on my site that my cpanel is already skinned (it's on the front page.. don't think you can miss it). If he really wanted to target an audience without offending, he should have posted the offer here @wht or at the cpanel forums (which I think he did.. I saw it there if my memory serves me well). Why couldn't that have been enough? heh.. but hopefully he's learned that most marketing emails sent without request aren't welcomed by most. Live and learn... no hard feelings at all. ;)
HostingDirect 06-03-2002, 05:49 PM Elena,
I am not so sure he only used WHT to gather his target list. I know I personally visit several other forums and I post my site in several web host search engines advertising that I us Cpanel. I know if I was looking for targets I would have used several different sources because there are many more than just WHT.
I guess my point is that WHT is not the only place he could have gotten legitimate information about my business and many others. Heck he might have gotten it from a google search. Just something more to think about :)
acidHL 06-03-2002, 06:09 PM Yeah I got this too...
StevenG 06-03-2002, 11:36 PM Well we didn't get one - An advertising email that is.
But then again we already have the XP theme from enhost -- So it clearly wasn't a mailing list or we would have it too...
btw, the XP themes going well with our customers Roy - cheers.
And thanks for the update an the flash - nice touches.
Hope your day gets better.

It's really nice to have clients like you guys!
In the meantime, I will be busy enhancing the current theme.
Trying to add a green XP cursor to the theme ( For IE6 only)
Check your Emails for the latest update!
I will inform u guys when the XP WHM skin is ready LOL.
Get-Hosted.com 06-04-2002, 06:27 AM I also received this. Best spam I've ever received.
mistral1 06-04-2002, 07:42 AM Those that created a storm in a tea cup at the beginning of this thread (e.g. Jag and others) are unwittingly helping Roy to publicize his cpanel XP theme. And from some positive posts it seems Roy is the winner in this case.

Well in my opinion, I don't approve spam from anyone - I seriously don't think Roy would have thought as his marketing as spam, I know if I received those emails I would have not been too bothered anyway - at least the product would have been relevant to me - unlike 99.999999999% of the usual spam.
Give Roy a break guys, seems to be providing a good service from where i am looking - Roy has already said it won't happen again and apologised...... what more is there to say?
Storm in a tea cup... good description in my opinion. (Just my opinions, not saying I'm correct, but just maybe one day I will be ):)

Roy@ENHOST 06-04-2002, 11:10 PM Wow,
You guys seem to have high regard of your wives, impressive!
Im not married but I dont even think most of what my girlfriend think and believe is true and correct.
Maybe things will change when I get married.

You are allowed thinking privileges? Could I get your wife to talk to my wife?;)
And Roy, I was thinking that email was directly to me. Now I find out others received it! It really hurts, Roy.:) j/k I really did not mind the email at all.
Do any of you receive snail mail from Interland offering hosting? It's like a 10 page color brochure. I always love it when I see those offers addressed to Perfecthost. Don't they check that list? Sheesh!

akashik 06-11-2002, 05:08 PM Did anyone ever run this theme past Microsoft's legal department? I asked on the CPanel forum once but got brushed off, so I presume the author didn't feel it was necessary. As far as I can tell MS has this to say:
Icons
Microsoft does not generally allow the use of our icons in advertising, in books and other printed matter, on clothing or other promotional items, on-line and internet locations, in software applications, in television programs, commercials, movies, or on video tape, as they are NOT to be used as "artwork" or design elements.
EXCEPTIONS: Use of our icons is permissible in relation to a training manual or documentation written for and/or about a Microsoft product. In such cases, use of Microsoft icons must be specific to the function of the icon within the Microsoft software, and not used as a graphical element or design for your own purposes. Further, icons cannot be modified or altered and must appear as they would within the Microsoft software.
In addition, Software developers (ISV’s) may be allowed to use icons specifically provided in Microsoft Software Development Kits (SDK’s) and certain other programming tools and applications, (like Visual Basic or Visual C++), provided the use of icons is specifically covered in the Microsoft End User License Agreement (EULA). Please carefully review your EULA and other product documentation to determine your rights to use Microsoft icons. You may also wish to note that Microsoft Press has recently released the Microsoft® Management Console Design and Development Kit, ISBN 0-7356-1038-X. Redistribution rights for certain icons are granted under the EULA. Please visit http://mspress.microsoft.com/books/4479.htm for more information.

I ran by MS months back about making a theme using the XP icons to make sure we weren't going to be slapped with a lawsuit or something. I got a reply pointing me to the same copyright and another set of legal docs (I'll try to find them again). Basically you can't use them for a commercial product, which would be Cpanel. Selling the theme itself means your selling their icons commercially for another commercial product, double whammy. I would advise them to make their own custom XP'ish looking icons and stay clear of using the MS ones for legal reasons.

Roy's theme looks good and i got it on sales instead of info. address. Anyway this email was usefull information. ;)
BTW, i am really sick of EzzMedia.com people sending me 600 K spam instead of requesting 3-4 time that i do not want there credti card and advertising services. :crap:
