View Full Version : waiting for stuff to ship
davidb 06-02-2002, 02:52 AM Are most people like this or is it just me. This effects at times like this when I just orderd stuff from ebay/amazon and now I just cant wait to get it. First off im now studing for ccnp, and someone else is paying for the supplies(I dont even have the money, my bank account is in the red). But in the last two days I just bought 1200 worth of a sim, routers, switches, and a book, plus some cables. Now since I am not paying for this, I cant do my usuall next day air mail. And it kills ME. I swear I must be going crazy, but if I have the money, I am willing to pay double the shipping just to get it in a day or two instead of a waiting the 3-5 day shipping(btw UPS is ALWAYS 5 days for me, even when the location is relaticly close, fex ex does a GREAT job). When I bought the Art of War(a book). The SHIPPING had cost as much as the book. I have other worse stories of my horrible shipping spending. Am I alone, or are others like me :()
OverSkilled 06-02-2002, 02:57 AM No, I was going bonkers to when I ordered my IRiver Mp3/Cd/WMA/FM Turner player. I ordered 2-day air and it came on the 3rd day! Hows that 2-day air? Please tell me! I was walking in circles on the seconday looking out the window every 10 seconds. But I just wanted to let you know that we are freak of natures too :)
grandad 06-02-2002, 03:13 AM If you're having grief, just think about the peron who is paying the bill!
akashik 06-02-2002, 03:57 AM I'm a serious impulse buyer so I know where you're coming from. If I can't have it right away I sit there going mad till it arrives. Fed Ex is great in my experience. 2 day air from Texas to Washington, and arrived at 10am on the day it should have - hardly a mark on the box.
But if I can, I'd rather crawl through broken glass to get something the same day rather than wait. :)

code_renegade 06-02-2002, 12:09 PM I can't wait for my orders from USA or Japan to come in most of the time too, but when I see the bill, that's another story. :emlaugh:
EMS is the way to go for me - 2 days from Japan and no more than 7 from USA. No Fedex/UPS please - they really bite (in terms of cost) :) Sometimes, the shipping costs as much as the items I buy, which makes me wonder why don't I just save up and fly there myself someday...
davidb 06-05-2002, 04:21 AM heh, about 1/3 or so of my stuff comes tommarow. Im so excited(of course the dte/dce cords wont come for another 4-5 days, damn HK)
weeps 06-05-2002, 08:19 AM I ordered stuff from amazon and got it the next day.. that was on monday got it tuesday. :-)
WebmastersHost 06-05-2002, 08:44 AM I think that's why the saying goes:
"Patience is a virtue." Aint that the truth.
richy 06-05-2002, 09:02 AM little off topic but i would appreciate if ya have any sites that describe what kit is best for setting up a cisco lab, im going in for a wide range of training soon and its been hard to figure out what to buy for the different cisco levels and i like you dont like to be kept waiting :) cant seem to find a decent list of kit for people on a semi sensible budget and i want a lab to play with :D
davidb 06-05-2002, 11:31 AM The key to getting a good lab is patients and research. Are you going for a cert or are you just wanting to learn cisco equipt for one reason or another. Anyway ebay is good, but becarefull. First dont belive anyone when they say they have the complete lab. A complete lab on ebay consists of at least one router :() Also I have seen similar hardware on ebay go for much different prices. Specificly I am speaking about the catalyst switches. Some people go up to 400 for some, I got mine for 250, and see no difference(aside from a cord or two, but thats just chunk change)
Also version numbers. There is a HUGE difference between a enterprise switch and a regular switch(the cli amoung others)
A router with IOS 10.3 is different then newer ones, ie no CDP.
At at rate, give me some more information and I can help you at least find a place to ask. For CCNP, it looks like I will be using 4 2501 routers(I know just 2501's but they do get the job done) one 1900 and one 2900 enterprise switches.
richy 06-05-2002, 02:19 PM umm
aiming for ccna to start with then ccnp etc. basically just to add to an mcse and oracle masters and rhce to complete the set. want to cover basic networking practice and any extra pertinent to hosting. thanks :) just wanna know what im going to want to lay out and dont wanna get left with kit thats useless.
davidb 06-05-2002, 03:35 PM For CCNA, you dont need that much. I got by with a 2501(you can get for about 300 on ebay, make sure its 12 IOS). Then the todd lammle book is considered the best CCNA book out there(I used it and ciso press prep library for CCNA) The lammle book should be about 40 or so, the press library is 150(3 books). Also I got the E-smin made by cisco, you can get it for about 80 on amazon. The E-Sim is great, it uses just about the exact same interface as the simulations on the real exam. It also includes video tutorials(small ones, 8 min or under, 20 of them). Also it has practice questions. Also for about 35 you can get boson test questions. Those I think are very good. Now the CCNA changed to 640-607 but all the 640-507(old test) applys, the only difference is the inclusion of the router simulations. Then if you plan on going twords the ccnp(which I am doing now) you can also get a 1900 catalyst switch for a couple hundred. This is not needed for the CCNA but gives you a better understanding of switching. Then it can be used for CCNP. Then for CCNP all you really need is some new books, a couple more routers, and possibly a 2900 switch. At least thats what Im getting. Good luck
richy 06-05-2002, 03:42 PM excellent thanks for the advice :)
