View Full Version : What should I offer?

I am interested in running a small free web hosting company that is targeted for gaming clan sites. It would serve as a feeder to gain popularity to Clangrounds.com, and for our future paid hosting service.

Our Material:
800mhz p3
20gb 7200rpm hd
512mb pc133 ram
Linux OS
Unmetered 10mb/s connection*
Free host management software???

*The big asterisk explanation*
I get a free co-location connection for helping a personal friend out with his site & business. He is on a 100mb/s unmetered connection with Cogent network, and he lets me have a 10mb/s slice of the pie. When I say unmetered, I do not mean unlimited. I am limited to the amount the 10mb/s can put out, and how the box handles the operations.

As you can see, this is not something I want to be hosting customer paid plans on...let alone our site. It is merely a free hosting opportunity for people who don't want annoying ads, and a game based enviroment. (www.clangrounds.net/theirname) This way if the box fails, it doesn't end up being a costly mistake.

But I am here to take suggestions and hopefully find out the limits this will have to prevent that from happening. I will not be the technical person of this operation for obvious reasons, I will serve merely as PR and Sales.

I mention sales b/c we will have a paid hosting section, just not on that box. When people need to upgrade their service to paid plans, it is our hope that they will stick with the company who has been there for them. We're a reseller with a company that has 99.9% guaranteed uptimes, good connectivity, support staff, etc etc.

Ok, enough of me flapping my gums...any suggestions for the free hosting aspect of this post? Suggestions like what plans I should offer, and how many accounts I should accept..

if you are gonna offer 100MB in the basic paid package, take the free one down to 70. Alternatively, move the basic paid package up to 150
Either way, every feature should be increased where possible in the basic paid plan :)
I would even be tempted to take the free down to 50MB

Been getting a lot of comments about that, I lowered the free plan to 50mb space.
