Just curious. They seem like the ultimate supplier.
![]() | View Full Version : Are there many hosts here who use Rackspace? Aussie Bob 05-31-2002, 11:59 PM Just curious. They seem like the ultimate supplier. jayjay 06-01-2002, 12:24 AM I'm sure there is, but there are other providers that provide a stable service a bit cheaper. Just in my experiance. panopticon 06-01-2002, 12:37 AM I would think that many if not most of the hosts here would really know their way around a server, and therefore they would not want to pay for, and going further, they would probably not even desire, the degree of server management Rackspace provides in their fully managed servers. The highly professional fast data center response time is a plus, but I would think many hosts wouldn't want to pay for someone else to poke around in their server. Not to mention that a high bandwidth user could get much better rates on the same amount of bandwidth (though RackSpace probably makes deals with higher volume customers to offer their servers for a fraction of what we pay). Edit: Typo Fixed - thanks AcuNett AcuNett 06-01-2002, 12:55 AM Are you talking about rackshack or rackspace panopticon viGeek 06-01-2002, 01:18 AM A guy i know hosts his actual 'host' site on rackspace. And has all his clients on a server at rackshack. Does this count lol? ckpeter 06-01-2002, 01:45 AM By the way, any one knows what's the IP distribution policy of rackspace? (free? monthly fee?) I couldn't seem to find that on their site. Peter panopticon 06-01-2002, 02:19 AM Oops thanks for catching the typo AcuNett (fixed above). I just got a server at RackShack so I've been typing that so much this week that I fear my fingers are not preprogrammed... swijaya0101 06-01-2002, 07:02 AM rackspace charge $2 / IP ... freakysid 06-01-2002, 10:22 AM Well I know someone who was with rackspace and left and took three severs over at dialtone instead. Don't think he was satisfied with the price/service mix at rackspace. But that was the first time I ever heard anyone complain about them. MattR - he is a member here but haven't seen him around much. He is more active at sitepointforums. First, although the technical support at Rackspace is exceptional they are not fully managed servers. Their technical support is exactly that. Support. Yes, you can call them 24/7 and they will help you with almost any problem but, they are not their to maintain and install software. This should be the hosts job anyway. However, we still use Rackspace for all of our hosting. Why? Because everything they offer is exceptional. They do not lack in any area from their support, to their security, to their network, and even their location. In my opinion, they have the fastest and most stable infrastructure in the dedicated server business. Yes, there prices are a little higher and you pay a LOT more for bandwidth. But, if you have developed a proper business plan, the cost of your servers should still not make up a large percentage of your operating expenses. Support Staff, Marketing, Merchant Fees, these are the real costs. The few dollars that you save by going with a cheaper provider do not even come close to outweighing the loss in service. If you are dealing with customers in which network uptime and speed are not as critical then I would stay away from Rackspace. It would be overkill for your needs. But, if your customers rely on you to be up 24/7 and can not afford any downtime whatsover then in my opinion, there is no better provider than Rackspace. It just depends.
