Short list:

SSL Certificate & Merchant Account. Most banks offer merchant accounts, there are also companies like www.cdgcommerce.com.

Its not that difficult to find how-to accept credits cards its hard to find the right merchant account provider that suits your needs, as per your volume and as per your requirements. Better do a WHT search it will help a lot. There are lots of reviews and suggestions out there.

Note each one down, read and tally all. It will take some time and study to find the one thats for you.

You don't go directly to VISA. Instead you need to either setup your own merchant account with a bank, or the most popular thing to do for smaller companies starting out is to get an account with a payment processor like www.2checkout.com

With 2checkout.com you can accept Visa, MasterCard and a few other credit cards. It's actually 2checkout that accepts the credit cards and payments for you, then they pay you every 2 weeks. It's the simplest choice if you are indeed a smaller company starting out (an assumption I made based on you not yet accepting credit cards).

I believe many people running small hosting businesses use 2checkout.com..... you can search on it here in these forums (2checkout, 2CO) and you'll get lots of results.

Hope that helps :)

So I would have to find a merchant account place on the web. Whats the differnces between all of them? Also how much do they usually take from your sales when you get a sale?

Difference comes down to customer service, pricing and how they work.

With a company like 2CO, customers actually make the payment on their site, so you don't need an SSL certificate. But you pay for that. 2CO I believe is 30-35 cents plus 5.5%. If you get a real merchant account it will be in the area of 30-35 cents plus 2.5%.

Ok. So can I ask what a good merchant account place is? When a user signs up for hosting and provides me with their credit card information would I just go to my merchant account and enter their info in an how much money. Money would then be taken from them and I would then activate their hosting?

Does ClientExec automatically send payments to your Paypal?

Well, you have different options for getting merchant account like Authorize.net , Worldpay, LinkPoint, 2CheckOut etc. If you are a programmer and expects high volume of online transactions then choose Authorize.net otherwise 2CO would be a better option for you.

Dont I have to put my items on 2co then on my site link to them on the 2co site for my users to buy it? I want my hosting clients to just enter their credit card info such as type, number, expiration date, and CVV2. Would 2co allow me to do what I am looking for? Would I just take their info and enter it into 2co and 2co would take the money from thier credit card?

Visit 2CO's FAQs, it will answer most of your queries. https://support.2co.com/deskpro/faq.php .

Yes, you need to send information to 2CO for online transaction and offcourse some programming experience is required. But if you are looking for a quick solution and a windows control panel then check Hosting Controller (http://hostingcontroller.com) or Helm (http://webhostautomation.com) . I have tested HC with 2CO and its works like charm.

Atleast the integration of HC with 2CO is pretty simple even for the novice user.

Any personal comments on authorize.net service? We're thinking of either Authorize.net or Wells Fargo (Great connections in Wells Fargo, but not sure how new they are to the Merchant account services)

There are a few things you will need:

1). Merchant Account
2). Payment Gateway (authorize.net, LinkPoint, etc)
3). Billing or cart software compatible with your payment gateway

Usually the company that sets up your merchant account will set up your gateway as well. Rates for Internet merhant accounts will vary based on your personal and business credit scores and the volume of business you anticipate doing. Typically the rate for Visa and MC should be somewhere around 2.2 - 2.8% per transaction, depending on the items I mentioned. The Gateway will probably also charge you a monthly fee.

I would avoid "3rd Party Payment Systems" like 2CO unless you have no other option. These systems usually charge very high rates (5+% per transaction) and often will hold some of your funds in "reserve" to protect themselves against chargebacks (most merchant accounts won't do this unless you're in a high risk industry).

People giving recommendations here, please know what your taking about!

Authorize.net is a gateway! NOT a merchant account.

Use 2Checkout, it processes credit cards.

It has a small processing fee and a $50 initial fee.
