Anybody here have experiences with advertising in magazines? I attended an BT e-buisness conference as an advisor for a local company. I got a free magazine subscription to a web dev/hosting magazine, pens, usual conference stuff etc. The magazine I normally bin after glancing through it whilst taking a dump. I ve not had many hosting orders recently, and as I was considdering advertising I thought it would be an idea to advertise in this magazine.
Well to be honest I dont really know where to advertise, banners are so expensive. And I can truthfully say I have never ever clicked on a banner advertisment before in my life. Apart from by accident. Pop ups just make people plain mad, so I dont really know where to turn.
When we first started we targeted local businesses by means of flyers. We have pretty much exhausted that market now.
Anyway, does anybody have experience with magazine advertising and if so is it sucessfull? I cant imadgine people clicking on banners, but I find it hard to believe that people would goto a URL they spotted in a magazine. Its £250GBP for a tiny advert and the daddies like host europe and rackshack have massive double page spreads. (Theres a cheeky one of headsurfer from rackshack in his suit rubbing some AMD whiteboxes :D ). If anyone has any good ideas then please give me a shout :)
Thanx

We put an add in a well known UK internet Mag. From a sales lead point of view it was the biggest waiste of money. £300 a month on a 6 month contract. Dont think we actually got an order from it. May have done good for the company branding but towards the end of the add contract we were fourced to change our company name. (That probably wont happen to you though)
A small add at the back of a mag with 4-6 pages of hosting companies. mmmm we wont be doing it again to produce sales, we may for branding, possibly if we have some spare money kicking about.

We have an advertisement in the inside front cover of the Harvard International Review. If people have been finding us through it, the results haven't been that noticeable so far, but we'll be patient for now.

IMO, advertise in a local magazine. I know several people who do this, they put an add in classified sections under (dial a professional), or (web services) etc. I beleive they pay $10 a week to get listed in the big saturday paper for south jersey.

Cool, thanks for your advise. Theres a free local paper here that gets delivered to everybodys house throughout the district/state. I phoned up for some quote and got some really cheap prices. I think I will give the magazine advertising a miss as its pretty expensive. Seeing as I run as more of a hobby than a real job I think it would be pretty crazy to spend £300+ on a tiny advertisement.

For $65k/issue I'd hire a dozen crazed marketters to go yelling our company name and url in the streets, passing out business cards along the way.
Positive word of mouth advertising is here to stay. The internet phenomenon has given individuals the capacity to present your business in the same fashion as large-scale companies. Get a few people who are very-very happy with your service and they'll be sure to sign others.

We do the same thing. Local advertising is great. We even advertse in some local papers in other states. Works pretty effectively. Of course they are more mainstream papers that usally cover the entire state.
It beats the national magazines though.
Why not advertise on the World Cup billboards.. those just beside the goals.. :D
Seriously, I am curious how much tons of $$$ that would cost just for curiosity's sake.. anyone knows?

I've heard from many people that magazine ads and radio ads just don't bring in much sales. Why are people still paying those exhorbitent fees if they don't work? And if so, why won't they pay for online advertising?
