Anyone looking at a cheap CD/RW?

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=286013

CompUSA has Sony 16X/10X/40X CD/RW's going for $40 online at the moment. I'm kicking myself as it's the same one I bought a while back for full price.

not sure. I see what you mean, but they usually list it more as being a refurb. I think in this case they're just moving them out to get rid of them - get it cheap, but don't return it.

Still, my Sony digital camera was from CompUSA and a refurb - never had a better camera in my life, and it's never broken down.

For $40 I don't think you can go wrong. :)

Speaking of burners....

Do any of you know much about the new DVD burners, how good they work?

CD Burner says SOLD OUT :(

My buddy has a DVD Burner, he loves it, but the discs aren't cheap (around $20 a pop I think).

There is a much better deal at Staples.com, starting 06/02.

481493 Pacific Digital 32x12x48 CDRW Drive $99.99 - $10 instant -$10/$20 coupon - $40 rebate = $39.99/$29.99 (shipped)

I wonder if Pacific Digital has Sony guts. I think my oatmeal this morning probably had some Sony flakes in it.

If I had to choose between a Sony 16x for $40 or a PD 32x(!) for $30, I'd choose the Sony. I love Sony CDRs. My old 8x has gone through many miles and still pumps out those cds perfectly every time.

but too bad that Sony is out of stock and it' refurbished. So I guess PD is the next cheapest CDRW.

I should not have rethink about buying it ... got stumble with it being refurbished unit, when I decided to buy, it's gone ...

cheers,

That's the thing about CompUSA. I found out about it via their mailing list, so if deals like that come up, it's pretty well broadcast. My refurb Sony cybershot was available for a few weeks before they sold out, but it wasn't advertised. Refurbs are hard to find on their site unless you really dig through it. Excellent discounts though - 50% or more usually.

Regarding refurbs, no you can't return them, but they still have their manufacturers warranty. In my exerience they're as good as retail - possibly moreso as if they got returned faulty they're repaired and tested before being resold

I'm a big believer in never paying retail :)

I got my burner today and pulling it out of the box, it comes in a retail box, and no where does it state its a remanf. the manf date on the burner is Nov 2001.

Overall its a great burner, i love it!

heh, my camera from them was the same - I checked it over expecting a small R stamped into it somewhere to show it was a refurb, and couldn't find one. It's been 4 months now and it's been running perfectly - not back for a 51% discount.

Still wish they'd done those CD Burner's when I paid full price for mine. :)

I got a refurbished printer and it came in a retail box with no indication of being refurbished.

Here is one ignorant post again,

I have never bought refurbished products in my life.
What is the difference between refurbished and brand new product? Refurbished ones are just second hand items that is repackaged to look like new item is that right?

Refurbished products are generally ones that were returned due to having a defect of some kind, were fixed by the factory (or authorized repair contractor) and then (in theory) tested to be like new quality. They often carry less of a warranty (90 days) but you have to check.

Refurbished products are a bit hit and miss. It could vary by manufacturer in a couple of ways. First, the original product may have just been sub-par and thus, even fixing it won't get you something that won't break. The manufacturera may also have different policies as to how refirbs are handled.

Think of it this way, the defect could have been anything. It is costly to fix different problems, so in many cases, defective merchandise is replaced, rather than fixed. Then all the products with defective battery doors are sorted and fixed at the same time by people who know how to fix that. Products where the 'brain' (computer) seemed faulty might be replaced by other techs.

So you could have gotten a product which had somethign relatively minor wrong with it, or something major that during testing, was deemed to be ok by a certain manufacturer. you just never know.

It makes me personally a bit uneasy to buy something that was returned, only because it is kinda like buying a car that has gone into the shop for problems. I'd rather buy a Camry which is known for being reliable and for staying out of the shop than a car that was fixed.

Hard to say. You get some good and some bad. There are places like DAMARK which offer nearly 100% refirbished products at some decent prices. Sometimes fixed means that they found the problem and replaced it so now everything is a-ok.

some of them are just returned as well. Someone bought it, decided they didn't like it, and wanted their money back.

I'd be dubious is it was a no-name brand at a place I'd never heard of, but getting a refurb Sony from CompUSA is a pretty safe bet :) They use the full manufacturer's warranty as well. About the only difference is they're much cheaper, and you can't send it back to the store for a refund.

The cost saving is worth the off chance you'll get a dud I think
