I know I've read at least one host here that sells hosting under multiple brand names. The one I remember had a "premium" brand and an "economy" brand, and unless you did a bit of research, you wouldn't know that they were both the same company - just selling different plans to different customers.
How common a practice is this? What are the benefits/problems with such an approach?
Your thoughts and comments are appreciated...
Thanks - Brian

I know of a few companies who do this and personally i dont see a problem.
Maybe having business hosting with premium tech support from one brand and economy hosting with get what you pay for kind of thing.
In fact we have been thinking of opening a business hosting company ourselves in the near future, with 24/7 tech support and more business orientated features. At present we mainly host personal sites and tech support isnt 24 hours only 17 or 18 hour support

I remember reading an article in Newsweek once about the same thing, but with toothpaste... Two completely different brands that offered much the same features (white teeth, no plaque, etc.), and were both made by the same company...
It gives you two names to compete against your competitors with. Its a pretty good business idea, IMHO.

Depends...one could argue that if they got rid of their second brand, that would be one less competitor :D
But, actually, I was told a story about this moving company, in some square state (sorry I forgot which one) which was doing business under a half dozen names. When a potential client was done calling all these "companies" and getting the same cost estimate, he was totally convinced that "these are the market rates"...

in reference to multi-brand, best example is Tide and other detergents, they are comming out with new detergents all the time, what they try to do is steal shelf space from other competitors, and marketshare.

A good example of one company using multiple brands in the hosting industry is Affinity.
They use:
www.affinity.com (premium hosting)
www.valueweb.com (unix & ecommerce hosting)
www.hostsave.com (budget unix hosting)
www.winsave.com (budget windows hosting)
www.skynetweb.com (dedicated server hosting)
and possibly more??
