View Full Version : AMD Fans just louder?
Neil V 06-24-2006, 06:30 PM Anyone know if the Stock AMD Chip fans are just plain louder than INtel ones?
My home built AMD one is so loud, you can hear it at the other end of the house on a decently quiet night. But if my monitor whern't on down here with my Intel one, I'm not even sure if the machine is on!
Is there a way to tell if over heating(as my mom, who is completly comuter illiterate, somehow figured out), or if it just needs a quieter fan than the one that came with the 3500 + chip?
Thanks!
dkitchen 06-25-2006, 10:40 AM This is quite true, I built an Intel Pentium D system the other day and was astonished at how quiet the whole machine was, you really couldn't tell it was on.
AMD coolers are pretty loud, and that's my only hate with AMD equipment.

Servers4me 06-25-2006, 11:54 AM My AMD Athlon 3400+ decided that it would catch fire last weekend, all the fans where working fine, it has 3 case fans and a CPU one. Looking at the logs in the AMD Dashboard it says the max temp was 59C which is within opearating limits.
Albert_chu 06-26-2006, 11:53 PM have you tried cleaning the fans? a lot of dust can get into the movnig parts of the fan..and can cause it to make loud noises
Disgruntled 06-27-2006, 12:05 AM I don't think it's normal for the fan to be so loud. I just recently bought a shop-built computer with AMD Athlon 64 3200 processor. It was actually pretty loud, but I think that was from a fan in the front of the case. I took it back to them, and two hours later they had it ready, and it was sounding like a normal computer.
PixelManual 06-27-2006, 01:17 AM AMD's are always louder from my experience. I generally replace the heatsink that comes with the AMD when building machines for friends and the like. Runs quite a bit quieter and cooler.
(Stephen) 06-27-2006, 01:43 AM It really depends, intel and amd both changes heatsinks and fans a bit on the retail kits. my opinion is to buy the OEM, save a few bucks and buy a cooling unit that will do what you want(powerful fans for overclocking, or near silent for that media center)

Now, this is something I'm worried about. I leave the computer on all day, and I won't be home to know if something happens. How big of a fire was it, and did it die out on it's own?
Thankfully, all my data is in the hard drive beneath the copmuter in an external...But someone just informed me of the Q-Silent feature of the MB. I turned it on, fan noise is gone, although now the Graphic CArd fan noise is back. I got a CPU Fan warning of 'low s peed'...but I've been told not to worry..
Jeff - Exceed 06-27-2006, 12:12 PM AMD fans are indeed always sunstantially louder than their pentium counterparts. I am however running an AMD 2600 XP + with a coolermaster fan and it's pretty quiet. I can't hear it if I'm more than 3 feet away from the PC. Still louder than any of my Pentium fans however.
camers 06-27-2006, 08:04 PM My fan that came with my 3800+ X2, is silent..
If you think they are loud, I'd be quick to say its mounted wrong, or its just a shoddy fan.
