View Full Version : chicken your thoughts?
zdwebhosting 05-31-2002, 06:11 AM http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52519
if you will look @ the top the poster there wants some free hosting and then you look at the bottom there are so many hosts just spamming in thier pre setup packages that cost money they dont take 1 minute to read a simple post
could you set a new rule that you cant say the same thing as you said previously, maybe the hosts will start reading / really typing out legit messages for people
i think i saw it like 6 times tonight alone this needs to stop.
thanks for your time, Zac
puggy106 05-31-2002, 06:31 AM I think that most hosts do read the posts, I know that I did. Even if he wants it for free, he still needs to look at what we offer. If he doesnt like any of our packages FREE or not free, then he can look at others.
If he decides that he likes one of the hosts that are offering him space then he can contact them.
This is just my personal feeling on the matter, but I can see where you are comming form:)
Take care,
alpha 05-31-2002, 06:36 AM I'm seeing alot of this exact thing lately...
frankly, I'd say its a waste of bandwidth for hosts to post the exact same message to every single request in that forum.
Simulated post and responses:
-----------------------------------------
Post: I want free hosting!
Reply: We offer a $5 solution thats right for you.
Post: Sorry wrong forum
Reply: We offer a $5 solution thats right for you.
Post: e-mail me all offers
Reply: We offer a $5 solution thats right for you
Post: Reply here and I will commit suicide
Reply: We offer a $5 solution thats right for you
I feel for those people who are looking for a real positive deal yet have to face with these utterly uninteresting and informercial-life replies...

:D
cperciva 05-31-2002, 07:51 AM There was once a rule which stated (roughly) "if you can't meet someone's requirements, don't offer your services", but I can't find it any more. I would certainly agree that it should exist... last time this came up, IIRC, was with Burstnet and dedicated server requests.
BTW this should be here (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=31).
AcuNett 05-31-2002, 09:31 AM I find it annoying as well.

ScottD 05-31-2002, 01:02 PM Oh cool, now there won't be 10 posts from the same person poluting page one of the "newest posts" search. :D
I like it I like it!
zdwebhosting 05-31-2002, 03:49 PM hehe i used my brain and a little anger and got a new rule made
woohoo less spammers here now.
btw.. thanks mods for making this rule.
Chicken 05-31-2002, 07:05 PM Feel free to report individual posts that don't match the request also. We'll remove them:
Person asks for 500MB and 10 GB for $10/mo., don't offer post a package that runs $15/mo. It wastes everyone's time.
zdwebhosting 05-31-2002, 07:11 PM chicken i dont see the report this thread to a mod where is that option at so i can get to using it :)
<edit> i see it right underneath the post :) </edit>
so chicken if we see a post thats not allowed we can just hit that right?
Chicken 06-01-2002, 10:58 AM Yep, you don't even have to write a long explanation. We get many reports like, "Doesn't match" etc. All reports are confidential, all are reviewed (generally you'll get a reply back regarding the report you sent in).
banner 06-01-2002, 01:34 PM You will? I've reported 5 - 10 posts over my time here and never heard anything back. Now, I have noticed that a few of those posts either disappeared or were edited, but I never heard anything back from the moderators. Anyways, I appreciate what you guys do and how on top of things you normally stay!

Chicken 06-01-2002, 08:24 PM Well, not all the mods will always reply for a couple of reasons. One, if I check a report and it has been handled, then I don't reply back to the person who reported it. Two, the mod who handled it may have been pressed for time for whatever reason and/or they may not be the replyin' type. Finally, if the same post is reported, I generally reply back to the first person who reported it, as we sometimes get 6 reports for the same post (note however that we'd rather get 6 reports for the same post than no reports at all).
It would be nice to set up a tracking function that would log the reports by username, so you could be recognized however this isn't a feature.
Please understand that all reports are appreciated, even if you don't get a note back, and that even if you only report one post that seems off to you, we appreciate that as much as the people who really go out of their way and report the spam that they run across. It all helps, and it all keeps the forum clean. Reports make this a quicker process, and often due to your help, most of the spam is gone from the board within minutes of it being posted.
(SH)Saeed 06-01-2002, 09:06 PM This issue was one of the reasons I've stopped visiting this board as frequently as I used to. It was so annoying to see the same COPY/PASTED plans on every single request. Like alpha mentioned, it didn't matter if the poor guy wanted a NT package with 100MB space, 1GB bandwidth for $2/mo.. All those hosts would COPY/PASTE their Linux plans with 2,000MB space and 35GB bandwidth for $15/mo..
banner 06-01-2002, 10:27 PM It's not a big deal one way or another to me. I knew the reports had been read because the posts were dealt with. I was just surprised to see that you usually tried to respond. Besides, I'm sure that most other users will agree that your time is better spent dealing with improper posts instead of responding to all of the users who report those posts.
