I'm thinking about getting a nice...
Dual 2.2 GHz Xeon
2 GB Ram
Raid 5 36GB SCSI (70GB Logical)
from Penguin computing..will run around $5100
Anyone have any experience with them? Any objections to this purchase :D ?

it seems like a lot of money, but its a great server.
Have you thought about leasing a server? It will be a heck of a lot cheaper (short term)

I can think of much more efficient ways to spend money ^_^, starting with using slightly slower processors, prolly cut $500+ off that :)

What exactly are you going to do with it? Why not start off with a 1U server from acmemicro.com for under 1K?
You can get a 1.13Ghz P3T with 1 GIG of ram for about $800 Then add more servers as you grow. I made some mistakes when I first started out by spending more that 3K on each server I have.
I understand that you want your customers to have a reliable system. These are pretty nice, supermicro is solid

P3T with scsi or P4 scsi would be cool

Well I have two servers at rackshack that I want to dump, and I figure this will give me pretty good future growth, with good hardware components

It'd probably make a lot more sense to buy lower end hardware and just upgrade it as need be. Frankly for that price, you should be looking at 5 lower end servers, if you're more confy with raid, 2x40gb raid 1, and bam, 1/5 the price for a very reasonable server. That or you could go with lower end servers and make a cluster with the right software.
<edit> btw, you'd also get a LOT more bang for your buck with 5-6 less expensive </edit>

Clustering sounds sexy, I was thinking about clustered webhosting but gave up since nobody knew exactly how to do it perfectly.

Thats why we haven't touched it. I'd say find a panel where you can have a master server and a bunch of slaves, and kinda do cluster management, not total clustering, and that way you can get lotsa bang for your buck with a few servers :)
