I was wondering what pays the costs for this board, i see you have no banners at the top and im pretty sure there would be plenty of companies who would like to advertise up there and you could probably get a pretty good cpm. Im sure you get at least $5cpm and probabbly higher.

Sorry to butt in, but the admins can't really answer that - it's up to MattF. That said, there aren't any plans as yet to institute ad banners serving until Matt revamps HostInvestigator using JSPs in the near future.

If we get enough agreement from other forum members (please post an Aye! here) then I'll check out ad banner networks and the like on behalf of him.

What about donations - ie.. pass the hat.

Setup a paypal account and ask members, who enjoy and learn from this forum, to donate a few bucks. I dont think any of them would mind donating five dollars to the pot. I see we have over 1600 member. If half of them piched in $5, that's $4000. I don't know what the monthly bill is for this server, but that should pay for a years server rental.

Any thoughts?

Clear Blue Media, All of the other banner networks out there try to pull way too much shyt with it's publishers and wine/dine it's advertisers.

If not clearbluemedia.com check out adbility.com first to see what banner networks they recomend.

Dont use a banner network. Set up a banner script thing on your server and sell direct to hosting companies and server companies, im sure they would be willing to pay a large amount for a banner. You could probably get someone to give you a server for free and money on top of that in return for a banner linking to them. :)

That is where the corupted sites and message boards that talk about hosting companies start. Plus it's biased and doesn't give the little guy a chance to advertise that way.

No, that is not the correct way of doing things, and I feel strongly about that.

I know it was just an idea, but it would end up hurting more than helping.

It wouldnt need to be a hosting company advertising, could be a company selling books on linux like amazon or something.

Due to this not being my dept., I've changed the thread title. I'll just mention that there were/are quite a few extremely generous hosts willing to help the board out, as well as members it seems which is quite nice.

I'd be willing to donate at least $5-10/month.. and not just because I'm a host and this board gives me a chance to advertise (in the appropriate forum, that is) but also cause it's a really a lot of fun checking this forum out (especially the general board).

So the paypal idea sounds great...

Depends on you resolution. At 640x480 he has five lines.:D

Disclaimer: This was meant to be entirely funny. I reject all notions that I think that sig should be changed. I actually like it.

Thank you.

Hot off the presses:

http://websnapshot.mycomputer.com/monitorres.html

640x480 is about 7% of current net users. So I suppose he's only breaking the rules 7% of the time on average *grin*.

I wonder what the cut-off for browser resolution related offences is? :)

Actually, on our main website, so far in 2001 640x480 carries 9.45% of the market, even thought it's designed for 800 x 600 and above.

800 x 600 63.47
1024 x 768 20.53
640 x 480 9.45
The rest the rest

Fine. you convinced me. I will reduce my signature by... 7 characters in order to symbolize the % of people using 640 x 480 (why couldn't you put 1152 x 864?!) resolutions.

Thanks for compliments though ... the "SIGNATURE" is grateful.
