There is a 60 day hold if you change any registrant info at GoDaddy, WildWestDomains, BlueRazor, or any other Godaddy Reseller. You cant even switch from WWD to GD before the 60 days are up.

...but that 60-day "hostage period" is peculiar to GoDaddy and it's sisters. It's NOT an ICANN requirement. That's why when I buy domains from people that have 'em registered at GoDaddy, et. al., I ask for them to send me the authID (domain password) and unlock the domain, then I transfer them out as fast as I can. Heaven forbid I should purchase a domain, then have some fool make a false claim about spam and have GoDaddy extort me for $50 to escape or $200 to merely re-gain control....

It's not a requirement, but ICANN did specifially mention this in their letters to registrars when the transfer rules were changed. While not required to do so, ICANN said the registrar may choose to do this if they wish.

By "letters" I'm guessing you mean "e-mails" ('cause I don't recall any actual letters). But, uh, exactly which "letter" do you mean? Do you know the date? Or the subject? I'll check my files when I get to the office later today, but I have no recollection of ICANN saying anything like "you can hold domains for 60 days when any of the contact information changes."

It was prior to the transfer changes that took place in I think...november of 2004. And yes, by letters I mean email. There was a notification that outlined all the changes and requirements for registrars to comply with. I definitely know this was in there because I recall being in a meeting discussing if we wanted to go ahead with this or not. Also, I think it specifically mentioned Registrant Name Changes, not just any information for any contact. As for GoDaddy's process, if their system recognizes an address change for a registrant as an "RNCA", that would explain them holding a domain. Going beyond that, in my opinion, is just greedy.

I can't speak for them, I can only speculate based on conversations our company had on the subject.

ownership change hold period is only at godaddy and its sister registrars, other registrars does not hold the domai nfor 60 days unless it was renewed or transfered in with the past 60days

Domainitor - Wow, I didn't know there was any such thing as an AuthID (password) for individual domains at GoDaddy. That means you can change the Admin Contact email and transfer them out without ever touching the Registrant Info. Cool! I'll have to look into that.

Bashar - Except Enom hold a domain for 7 days after a push from another Enom account.
