oh christ that's classic.
Incognito 05-30-2002, 02:09 PM You should ask them to include links to your sites on their page.
Not meaning to be rude, but if I'm going to copy gonna go all the way and pick a pixelbrick site...let's see...oh...found the perfect name for the site I intend to copy....hostingrockets.com....must be at least as obvious as the ones who copy Kiwi.
MCHost-Marc 05-30-2002, 02:14 PM Well, i contacted their hosts ...if they dont respond it goes to the upstream within 24 hours ...Verio, RackShack, etc. :) The search goes on ...
xirus 05-30-2002, 02:43 PM
masterhost 05-30-2002, 02:51 PM Kiwi,
Let us know how this turns out
FDrive 05-30-2002, 02:53 PM You must be doing something right for all of those people to be copying you...
vibehosts 05-30-2002, 02:59 PM My favorite part would have yo be when they promote MChost
"the MCHost reseller plan gives you the flexibility to Host UNLIMITED Domains "
weeps 05-30-2002, 03:16 PM haha :-) At least you know people like the design marc.

mpope 05-30-2002, 05:29 PM Marc,
What you should do is this - on your site, statically link to a 1x1 pixel called something like "5-28-2002.gif" or something. Don't put the image size in the <img> tag. Then, every month, replace this image with a 600x800 image that says "This site was copied from www.mchost.com".
If you want to, you could even make a link to your site.
Anyways, it might be something to think about! :D
(of course, this won't work unless it is a very blatant copy of your site...)
Walter 05-30-2002, 05:56 PM Oh lord, sometimes I wonder what some people have above their shoulders!
My best laugh is on the one who didn't even remove the MChost...
HostInspect 05-30-2002, 06:07 PM You can put Humanclick watcher on you site Marc, and well we find it pertty handy, because some people just save as the page and edit it, and when they preview they don't know what that script does, and then in our side we see who is viewing it and from WHAT, sometimes we see our pages being viewed as E:/Documents/66asdfhAD.shtml /etc and form some other hosts, it just funny.
PulseHost 05-30-2002, 06:25 PM  These people must be really smart... if they can't even remove the McHost text, are they really capable of running a web hosting business? :(
Unlike other reseller providers where you have to buy each of your clients' account separately, the MCHost reseller plan gives you the flexibility to Host UNLIMITED Domains under one large account and set as well as monitor each clients disk and bandwidth usage using the WebHostManager Software! We will remain completely in the background - and fully manage the server hardware and software for you.

mdrussell 06-02-2002, 03:37 PM Kiwi, you could always register tek-studios.com and point it to the MCHost site - as a thank you for the kind and professional way with which they dealt with you
Matt
Shawn (GEcom) 06-02-2002, 03:49 PM [Edit] Oops, sorry for the mistake. I guess I should have thought of that first, I apologize for the post.
dside443 06-02-2002, 04:28 PM Shawn --> Some of those sites you listed are MChost resellers. I believe they must've had permission from MChost to use that content on their site.
:bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling:
Hey Kiwi want to start an "I've been ripped off" support group... LOL
Where's Judge Judy when ya need her! :D
Someone from this thread visited my web site. I have not read this entire thread but what's the problem? Yes, I'm a MCHost reseller - anything wrong with that Kiwi ;)
John
I have not ripped anything from mchost's site - please think before you talk.
John
iamdave 06-02-2002, 06:46 PM Marc, I fell bad for you. Now, it seems that everyday another "company" is ripping your site. I'm wondering do you ever take legal action against any of these "companies?"
I'm wondering do you ever take legal action against any of these "companies?" Most of the time it's not "worth it" as the legal costs far outweigh the return especially if the thief isn't within the same country :( For some however it's def the way to go. I've found many can be taken care of by contacting the upstream provider however I despise that route since I'm on the side of it not being the upstream's responsibility to protect copyrights :( I _wish_ there was an easier way to deal with, better yet prevent, such things.
Rewdog 06-02-2002, 07:15 PM Maybe there should be a new show on WHR where we call up these companies? We could get Deb, Kiwi, or the original site owner on 3 way as well as we call them up :)...
chrisb 06-02-2002, 07:31 PM It's definitely wrong for someone to copy your logo or entire site. However, just copying some text doesn't seem that bad to me. Why? Because most of the copy will be similar anyway if you sell a similar service, and AFAIK, you can't copyright text.
I've visited thousands of host sites, and many use the same graphics, and same copy in many instances. For example, most use the same tables for comparison & features charts, and make a few changes.
On top of that, the info on host webpages is so similar in information, it's really hard to know if someone copied you or not in some instances. I think the wrong that's done in copying is how it's all put together. I mean if the site looks 66% or more like yours, it was probably copied, and yes, I agree, that is wrong.
Another case in point... I don't believe most hosts write their own TOS, and I see no need to re-invent the wheel. What's really funny though is when a host doesn't even bother to change the original host name or modify the content to fit their specific situation.
Most hosts that offer reseller plans don't seem to mind and some specifically state that you can use their copy, images, etc. If you are a reseller, it's probably best to specifically state if copying is not allowed for resellers; otherwise most resellers take it as a given. No, you don't make your pages look like theirs; but it's to the main host benefit to allow you to copy some things. The sooner your host site is up, the sooner both of you will make money. Note that I'm only talking about resellers in this paragraph.
Having said that... if someone copied my logo or my entire site, I'd definitely be steamed. If they just copied some text pages and a few images and designed their pages differently, I don't think it would bother me.
Rewdog 06-02-2002, 07:48 PM plagiarizm is the word that comes to mind?
