VPS is the next thing in hosting. All experts say that this is going to be big. I have a question though and maybe you guys can help.

Will anyone pay over $100 for VPS? What will people look for in VPS environment? I've seen prices well over $100 and I wonder why anyone will pay that much when dedicated can be bought for cheaper. Although I have my own theories I wanted to hear from some of you. Based on my research there are times where VPS can be a great solution for smaller to even medium sized companies and developers.

Input.

Thanks

Of course you'll see some dedicated servers cheaper than VPS. You'll also see reseller accounts that are more expensive then VPS and dedicated servers, or even virtual domain hosting accounts for more than reseller accounts ;).

we ran the same thing

'unlimited domains' 5-10-20 gigs etc

limiting the number of accounts per package is the only way to go
remember these people are cheap and they tend to be abusive with system resources. watch the chat rooms and the mysql usage.

we got killed doing this

25% of gross revenues eating 50-60% of transfer
and the mysql sheenanigans used excessive system resources.

be careful

I'm not sure if limiting the number of accounts will do it. I think limiting the resources is the way to go. For example, % of CPU, RAM etc. When the customer gets to its quota then its time to move up to a higher plan then higher plan then to dedicated etc. This is pretty much the way I see it.

As far as I know limiting CPU/RAM is possible with Ensim Serverexchange product only.

Thought, I have heard about some custom FreeBSD patched kernels that support this feature as well...

To consistently get $100 per VPS - just bought a new system HSPcomplete to manage the biz. So far, it's been great and I think they're trying to increase customer base, so you can totally get it for really cheap.

Isnt the CPanel+WHT combo a VPS system in itself?

That's "virtual hosting" on a dedicated server, but the definitive point of a "virtual private server" (which is marketed under a few different names and with a few differences among them) is that your account acts essentially like you had your own dedicated server. Basically, you are sharing the hardware and network connections of the machine with other users, but you aren't sharing the os or software. For example, if you're running Cpanel and WHT on a unix box, all of the sites on the machine are being served by the same Apache installation. On a VPS, each account has its own installation of the webserver software, the mailserver software, etc; and its own complete directory structure.
