Hi, I'm running windows xp pro on an alienware with 3.6 GHz, 1gb ram, 256MB nvidia gtx video card um...let me know if there's something else you need to know (i'm at work and that's all i can remember at the top of my head)

anyway, the problem that happens is I'm in firefox and sometimes I click a link and then the whole computer freezes. Like I can't even move the mouse. I then restart it manually but during the bootup screen it says "cpu settings changed, please go in and adjust/save" or something to that effect. I have to go in and save the settings in my bios/cmos and then it starts up normally.

This has only happened twice in the past month and appears to happen when I'm using a lot of programs at once and click a link in firefox. At least those are the only similar factors that are present when it happened both times.

Any ideas? I contacted alienware with their alienautopsy program and they said everything appeared normal, but to reinstall windows if the problem persists.

I'd rather not have to backup everything I have on there and reinstall windows...but if I have to i will D:

well

1. check for spywares, adwares also viruses.

2. try to use other browsers and check if the same problem presists.

3. format your drive if your going to reinstall windows. finally do it.

Did you try rebooting in safe mode? To do this ,when the computer is starting up repeatedly hit F8. When you are in safe mode you can scan for viruses and check settings.

Try this

1)Remove Firefox and reinstall

You are getting that CPU message because your not turning off the computer properly, Its normal when you do a manual reboot.

Next time when your computer freeze try to hold the power button for 3-5 sec and it will turn your computer off.( You willl not see the CPU message)
