View Full Version : Which OS for Plesk

Quick question...

I have a Pentium Dual Core server that currently has a CentOS 4.3 x_64 installation. I'd like to install Plesk on it, however it doesn't appear that Plesk 8.0 supports CentOS 4.3, only 4.2 and not the 64 bit version. It does, however, support Fedora Core 4 64bit.

Anyone use Plesk on either Fedora Core 4 64bit or CentOS 4.2 32bit that could recommend which is more stable. Typically, I would say CentOS right away, but I feel sort of bad buying a proc. w/64 bit capabilities (EMT64) and running a 32 bit OS on it.

Thanks!
Tom

Tom, we have a general rule - Fedora for Plesk and CentOS for cPanel. And as Plesk 8 fully supports FC4 that is what you should put. But our standard server these days is AMD Opteron so a 64bit OS is an easy choice there. Intel dropped full 64bit support a while back. The EMT64 is a 32bit chip with Extended Memory - it emulates running 64 bit on Windows Xp x64, but will run it in 32 bit mode only. If you want 64bit, gotta go AMD.

Thank you for the advice. I've heard that support for Plesk tends to be better with Fedora than CentOS. Really, as the CP installs over a base system, I really do not feel there will be much of a difference on which to run in terms of stability. Currently, the server has CentOS 4.3 x86_64 running on it w/the SMP kernel. Sort of neat that a P4 chip can run as a 64bit dual proc. nowadays! What is perhaps even more scary... they have Celeron Dual Core chips now that will do the same.

Anyway, I'll probably load Fedora C4 x86_64 on it to get the warm fuzzy of having my emulated 64bit environment (that will probably never be accessed or give any performance enhancements!). Am hoping to have an Opteron box soon as that certainly seems the way to go right now.

Thanks again.

Yah, you'll prolly see no performance boost with the emulated 64bit architecture. We have plenty of P4 dual core boxes on standard i386 and I like 'em. :)
