I've had no problems since i started using it. -Edward- 01-29-2001, 01:45 PM Without that software installed the cannot send mail through your server. It will only act as the pop mail server. To send mail without that package they must use there isps smtp server. -Edward- 01-29-2001, 01:51 PM one day my posts will go in the correct order. raylin 01-29-2001, 02:19 PM I am not quite sure. After I install this SMTP server software, I can use a e-mail client software like outlook or becky to send mails via my virtual site (say, http://www.mysite.com), correct ? If I don't install it, even I have enabled the SMTP switch for a virtual site. That site's users can not send mails via their virtual site, correct? netastic 01-29-2001, 02:28 PM will the smtp mail server address be "smtp.domainname.com"? -Edward- 01-29-2001, 02:31 PM yourdomain.com - for each domain on the server. netastic 01-29-2001, 02:35 PM yourdomainname.com? you mean smtp.yourdomainname.com don't you? i can't just put the domainname without a host prefix like "smtp." can i? i am talking about the client email settings for the smtp mail server address...just to be clear. [Edited by netastic on 01-29-2001 at 01:37 PM] -Edward- 01-29-2001, 02:37 PM Yes i mean yourdomain.com. Pingu 01-29-2001, 02:48 PM If you want it to be smtp.yourdomain.com, then you must add an A record with hostname "smtp" to your DNS settings, pointing to the IP address of yourdomain.com. Then add an MX record, pointing to smtp.yourdomain.com netastic 01-29-2001, 02:55 PM so if i got this right, i would tell my customers to type in the pop mail server address in Outlook Express as "pop.yourdomainname.com" and the smtp mail server address as just "yourdomainname.com" Chicken 01-29-2001, 10:09 PM both, yourdomain.com Cael 02-03-2001, 04:52 AM So, can I control like xdomain2.com can't use the xdomain1.com or other users' smtp url? And can I block all the non-users of my server from using the smtp ??? Chicken 02-03-2001, 11:13 AM I don't think so exactly. Keep in mind you are sending mail through the server, not the domain. When you put in the SMTP host name it just accesses the server and I doubt it matters what domain on the server you put there. Might be wrong. That isn't to say that you will be sending mail through a user name on another domain. They will still be sending mail via their username (which is what the server is checking for as far as I understand it). By using the pop-auth relay, you are essentially opening up a relay for non users of your server (in a way), so that they can send mail from their ISP dialup connection. This is a short window (15 minutes I believe), and they still must use their account (user name and password). I wouldn't say that it is impossible for a non-user to exploit the 15 minute window, but it is safer than opening up the server completely. Technics just delt with this a bit. I've only had one problem and the person who reported it didn't forward me the whole email (just the spam message body itself), so I couldn't even tell if the headers were forged, or if the email did in fact go through the server. Overall, it worked out fine for me, and does for most people I think. -Edward- 02-03-2001, 11:17 AM I now check my email logs on a daily basis and have found a lot of relaying denied messages with this package so for me its worked. |
