Hi.
I am new to this server game, I regularly feel the need to install the Unix server on my Laptop for learning purposes, but I was wondering whether there are any Linux drivers to support my hardware.
How does Linux work with a particular PC when there are not Linux drivers for the Hardware?
Hope that you got my point, sorry for any confusion, and thanks for taking my post into consideration.
Thanks again
Alex

Linux by now has a fairly large database of drivers...
If you by a major brandname or download it from their website you shouldn't have much of a problem

Hey!
I suggest you save yourself the pain and invest in a copy of VMWare Workstation:
http://www.vmware.com/products/desktop/ws_features.html
That way you can continue to use your laptop for day to day things, and can install Linux into the VMWare machine. VMWare will hide any "quirks" in your laptop hardware and give you a better platform to learn on.
It's also a lot easier to reinstall Linux into VMWare than onto your laptop when you mess it up - and you will mess it up.
:D
Good luck and have fun!

Yes, first thing I learned when I first started admining my Linux server: HOW TO COMPLETELY MESS LINUX UP IN 30 SECONDS OR LESS :D

I'll second the vmware reccomendation...
I use it on my PC and it works great... Running XP, 95, and Linux all on one PC... :)

I found some articles that may be of interest to you. Of course the VMWare suggestion is probably the easiest route if you're wanting to use Windows for everyday work, etc. I actually ran Mandrake 8.2 on a Compaq N600C notebook and it workes very well until I had to return the thing as it was only on loan from the shop ;-) Oh well. Anyway here's the links:
Lots of info about various Sony notebooks and Mandrake http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/hardware/hmlf4.html
Thread about your notebook and X under debian http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2001/debian-user-200108/msg00204.html
Thread about USB on previous but similar model. http://returntonature.com/pipermail/linux-sony/2001-October/000065.html
Hope some of this helps.

I installed SuSE Linux on my laptop, and that is working great. I think it has one of the easiest installers of any linux distro, and should already include the required drivers.
