View Full Version : Domain Transfer question

Hello,

I have a question about transfering domain from one registrar to another.

Suppose I have a domain xyz.com , and I have nameservers created for that domain name ns1.xyz.com and ns2.xyz.com which are pointing to some ip.

If I transfer the domain to another registrar , will the nameserver remain intact ? Or will I need to create the nameservers again at the new registrar?

Please understand that I am not asking about the nameserver to which the domain name is pointing but the nameserver created for that domain name.

Thanks

You mean if the DNS records you set up for your domain will also transfer to the new registrar ?

As far as I know they do.

(bear in mind: I have known to be a total idiot now and again so "As far as I know" may not be very far at all)

Yes, they should remain.

Except if the losing registrar is GoDaddy. As far as I've learned they aren't creating nameservers at the registrar, only in their local system. Even their FAQ states that these are almost useless if you'll want to use them for the domains registered elsewhere.

I've never had that problem. But I really haven't used them in about 1-1.5 years.

I've got a direct link to their FAQ article about that: http://help.godaddy.com/article.php?article_id=663&topic_id=&&

Well Actually the registrar is Godaddy , I want to transfer to Moniker.

I think Stan Marsh the link you gave is not related to what I am asking , over there it is actually written that if you have domain registered at some other registrar , can you register nameserver for it at godaddy and obviously that aint possible ;)

Anyone got any confirmed answer about this ?

I dont want that I put an order at Moniker to transfer , and as you know if you transfer domain from one registrar to another it usually take aorund 5 - 6 days and during that time if the nameserver i have created for that domain get deleted , my personal sites will remain down for 5-6 days as i wont be able to modify the domain at the new registrar either .

Hmmm... CrestHost, you're probably right. I just came with this article when I had tremendous problems while trying to use nameservers registered at GoDaddy with a domain registered elsewhere. It just returned 'invalid, not registered nameservers' error. I finally got around that, but it cost me some time and effort.

Taking into account that I was (probably) not right bashing GD w/o reason, you should be fine.

BTW, an *EXCELLENT* move, CrestHost! Moniker is so much better!

Good luck!

I want to transfer to Moniker.

In that case, ask them. :D

Ideally the DNS will remain the same when you transfer to another registrar. But
as always, trust...but verify. ;)

My experience with transferring over 20 domains away from GoDaddy is that the DNS continues to operate at GD for a few hours after the domain transfer completes. There was one case where it cut off immediately. There was a couple of hours downtime from the time I got the "Transfer Complete" mail until I could get DNS set up at the new registrar.

That's why I would like to be able to set up DNS at the new registrar before the transfer is complete, so that there is no reliance on a grace period from the losing registrar.

In my humble experience of doing hundreds of transfers, the nameservers remain from the previous registrar and you have to log into the new registrar and change the nameservers to theirs (assuming you want to use their nameservers). In any case it's always good to check and only takes about a minute to check/change.

Nameservers are registry objects. If you (actually your registrar) create a nameserver, you're creating an object in the registry that is a "child" object of your domain. Transferring a domain has no effect on a nameserver; the child object (nameserver) is unchanged.

The original post asked about creating nameservers under their own domain. A transfer will not disturb the nameserver's as defined in the registry.

I just read that article. It's ancient and incorrect. If one of our customers were to go to Network Solutions and try to get them to create a nameserver, they'd be told to come to us. Only a domain's sponsoring registrar can create, modify, or delete nameservers. Network Solutions is just another registrar, not an omnipotent force....

Thank you very much Domainitor.

Actually I asked this question to other people few times before but everyone is usually thought I am asking about the nameserver the domain is pointing to rather than the nameserver I have created for the domain .

Even few people in this thread have misunderstood my question.

But Thanks you have cleared my confusion.

I know this is a different case, but I just recreated the condition where you can lose DNS service during a transfer away from GoDaddy.

1) Use GoDaddy's name servers. (Different from OP's question, but commonly done.)
2) Request transfer from other registrar
3) Receive mail from GoDaddy saying it will transfer in 5 days if you ignore this
4) Log in to GoDaddy and approve transfer
5) While transfer still in progress, lose DNS services from GoDaddy.
6) Wait for gaining registrar.
7) Enter DNS at new registrar.

If you wait the 5 days, GoDaddy doesn't delete your DNS information for a while. Certainly long enough to enter it into your new registrar's system.
