View Full Version : Over 40 crowd
chrisb 05-29-2002, 07:09 PM I've heard it said that over 80% of webhosts are teenagers. From reading posts here about taking exams, etc., it appears to be more like over 90% to me.
Anyhow, at 48 years of age, I'm just wondering if there are any people my age or older that are resellers here? Speak up now, and don't be shy.
BTW, I prefer to work with a reseller that doesn't have homework to do. maturehosting.com... that's an idea :o
mwatkins 05-29-2002, 07:13 PM Not a reseller, but a shared account, dedicated server and co-located server user. 41.
I too prefer vendors that can stay up late on school nights!
SoftWareRevue 05-29-2002, 07:34 PM :pimp: What you younguns talkin bout?
UmBillyCord 05-29-2002, 07:45 PM I had a feeling Dennis would post here. His title is "New Title Here Soon". I say he changes it to "Grandpa". :D
Techark 05-29-2002, 07:59 PM but was for a few years. At 46 I know what you mean tho, I will not be closing down to go away to school anytime soon:D
But hey as they say you are only as old as the person you are feeling, thats why I married a younger woman:o

I was poking fun at having teenagers. ;)
I always wanted to have four kids. But after an emergency c-section with our first and my wife having a near-fatal hemorrhage after giving birth to our second, we decided enough was enough.

Fair enough. My wife and myself have been so lucky with our children. All near perfect pregnancies with no sickness. Near perfect births, except for the screaming part. I stopped when the nurse told me to shutup. I was scaring the other expectant mothers apparently. ;) :D
I truly feel for those couples who try so hard to have children but for one reason or another, can't.

rinnando 05-30-2002, 01:03 PM It is not just the teenagers that seam to be in the majority but the men as well. Why
do people always think that only men can work in the IT industry?I have been fascinated by it all my life and I can assure you I am
100%women!
I wonder how many women there are here?
As for age you are only as old as you feel and I stopped counting long ago.

mwatkins 05-30-2002, 01:08 PM I wonder how many women there are here?
Not me but my wife is just a tad younger than me and has been a SQL / C++ developer for 15 years. Plenty of women in software development although certainly some companies seem to be culturally 'male' more so than others. Its a shame - I love having technical women on a project team.

Of course, the "over 40 crowd" includes women. You make some good points. The IT biz does appear to be male dominated.
As for the men here marrying younger women, I wonder how much they had to pay them. :)
Jedito 05-31-2002, 02:41 AM I'm 29 (30 in october), am I old enough to post here?

That could be dangerous for an old boy like you. :D
BTW, my Uncle is over 50 and just married a 36 year old. They just had a baby.

It looks like too many think only WHT has all the answers. Teenagers are among the Minority when it comes to the Hosting business as a whole. They maybe in the majority "here", but it is a very small segment of Hosters who post or are registered, at WHT.
Not to hold back on giving credit where credit is due, age is really meaningless when it comes to any business. Responsibility and Accountability, along with Morales and Ethics, determines how well/how long, a business remains a business.
As far as age goes, I always remember when my ex-father-in-law (early 50's) was referred to as a youngster -- for the very first time. Seem to catch him off guard and I don't know why. :) The man calling him a youngster was in his 70's and from his point-of-view, probably had every right to call him a youngster.
The older we get the more we become aware of -- as opposed to learning, which some never do no matter how old they get.
I include myself in the 40+ bracket and Bogdan can call me a youngster, anytime he feels like it. :D

I didn't just get that 80% figure from this group. How do you know most hosting companies are not teens. Where did you get your information to the contrary?
Age is not meaningless to business. It takes time to learn people skills, etc. This is the process of growing up, more often referred to as maturity. Grant it, there are those that never mature psychologically; but maturity has a great deal to do with how one handles responsibility in their business, including hosting. Wisdom also usually comes with age. I'd give anything to have the wisdom of someone 25 years my senior, and stay the same age.:)

Rotifer 05-31-2002, 12:33 PM This is nice, there should be an over 30 forum! Oh, and the hosting company I work for is owned by a woman. :)
Barbara 05-31-2002, 02:18 PM - almost 42.
- female.
- divorced mother with sole custody of a teenage boy
- been working with computers and software for 18 years now.
- been doing web design for about 3 years now.
- about to step into the hosting world.
Now, is it any wonder that I'm getting some grey hairs?
mberst 06-08-2002, 04:40 PM Age does make a difference and it is silly to pretend that it doesn't. Younger people learn faster and have fresher perpectives; older people have more life experience and better people skills. Always? No. Usually? Yes. One is not better than the other and each age group brings something important to the mix.
How does this apply to the hosting business? There is a serious imbalance that is caused by too much emphasis on the things younger people are interested in-- learning new tech and pinching pennies-- and too little emphasis on the things we old-timers are interested in-- long term business relationships, real world applications, and professionalism.
It is entirely appropriate for seasoned and experienced business people to question taking on a teenager as a business partner. That does not mean write them off because of their age, but it does raise questions.
Each age group has exactly the skills and the knowledge that the other needs and from my observation we old timers do a lot more listening to the young people than they do to us.
But then again, maybe I'm just being an old fogey;)
chrisb 06-08-2002, 07:19 PM That was excellent! Thank you for posting that. I especially liked this part and agree with it totally:

I'm 50 and have been reselling hosting since july 2000. It is great fun and for me more of a hobby than a business. I resell all of the major types. Alabanza, WHM/Cpanel and Plesk through different sites. :) :D

Welcome to the group! Good to see someone around my age in the hosting business.:) That seems to be a rare thing these days.:(
I didn't think anyone sold Alabanaza anymore. Anyhow, out of those 3, which of your hosting packages sells the best, CPanel?
mberst 06-11-2002, 01:15 PM Hey wait a minute... isn't "HAL" a computer? I seem to remember some film from the 60's.....
Hey wait a minute... isn't "HAL" a computer? I seem to remember some film from the 60's.....
Hi All..
Yes... HAL is the computer from the classic Kubrik film 'Space Odyssey 2001'. The computer is better known as the 'HAL9000'. I use this name because I am so long at the computer that I feel that I have turned in to one :)
Re: Alabanza.. I still sell this regularly but of the 3 systems I resell, CPanel is the most popular. In the order of resell for me. 1)Cpanel. 2)Alabanza. 3)Plesk. :) ;)

I'm in it right now! Yeah, you're right - they are going through a process during that period of their lives. It's not always easy but trying to be fair and objective I have to admit that most of the time they're just great (99.5% uptime) :agree: :stickout but when there are problems in that age it can be really hard (0.05% bad downtime) to handle  and I would prefer to hide somewhere out in the forest ;)
