View Full Version : Virtual Server Plan / Tera-Byte / Opinions

Looking for virtual server of 1-3Gbytes HDD and 30-50Gbytes transfer at a low price of 50 or less USD per month with unlimited domains (4-5 for the moment)

My first choice is Tera-Byte.com virtual server plan but it?s a little bit higher than this and it?s hard to take it when I see full dedicated servers from Tranxact Global and Rackshack at these low prices.

I want a virtual server because I don?t have time to check the server all the time if it?s up or down, check for security fixes and knowledge to set it up or fix it if something come up

What do you suggest,
what's your opinion about all these,
what's your experience ?

Thanks

Any former or current users of virtual servers ?

As you say with a dedicated server you should have a good understanding of Linux and security issues espeically. One of the main reasons for the apparent price difference is support. Many of the cut price dedicated server offerings offer limited support i.e. hardware and reboots.
With a virtual server your host *SHOULD* be maintaining the server you hosted on for secuity and performance issues so that you can simply upload your site via FTP and just worry about that and not if you apache or BIND daemons have failed etc.
However the major advantage of Dedicated Servers is their flexibility. You can do whatever you want as long as its within the Terms of Service of your host.

I agree with you flyinghosts

Because I didnąt use any virtual server plan before and I know only the reputable Tera-Byte.com offering this service I would like to see if there are other members here with an experience to tell me if this kind of service is worth paying and if it covers the needs of a medium batch of sites (around 4-5).
Also I would like to hear any problems that may arise from this use or anything related to my post

Thank you all for your time
Waiting to read your thoughts

Hello

I have not tested tera-byte Virtual servers but I have an Ensim VPS with remarkablehosting.

Remarkable is very expensive in comparison to tera-byte but we have had something about 100% uptime during last 40 days (just 2 minutes down time for core switch restart).

The most important thing about a VPS is that your host is responsible for server hardware and most of the software. In fact you can think of it as a managed server.

With both dedicated server and VPS you will need some administration information but you will need more with dedicated.

Perhaps I was in a bad situation, but I was on a VDS for about a week and it was absolutely horrid. I failed to see the point of having it, since anything you really wanted to do to exercise your 'control' over the server wasn't permissable as 'pseudo-root'...

I say go with real dedicated. Even if it means a crash course in linux...VDS IMHO is just a poor excuse to charge more money for a shared environment.

I am sorry that you had a bad experience with VDS. But a lot of this depened on the user and also on the technology used. For example, freevsd is pretty limited, while ensim's private server could rival real dedicated server.

Furthermore, some users simply needed root access to install some custom software, and a VDS is fine for them. However, if you want real hardware control, extensive system modification, etc, you are better off with a real dedicated server.

Ya, my bad...it was freevsd I was on. I was way far from impressed. However, with some of the prices I've seen people trying to charge for VDS', I guess they have to be okay for some people...

However, I still stand firm in my crusade against VDS! :p

I am curious, what host were you on and what host are you on now? I know freevsd is quite restrictive, but I didn't think it would make someone go on a crusade. :)

I think there is a big misconception that VDS is simply a super-sized shared hosting account. It is not. But people sell VDSs as if they are just bulk reseller account with a low price.

It was a decent but small host...I don't want to drag their name thru the mud by mentioning problems that really weren't their fault.

I'm kidding about the crusade thing...I didn't like join a support group or anything over it...but it did kinda tick me off and made me wonder how anyone could possibly be happy with a vsd.

I would have thought the opposite was true as far as misconceptions...I would think that people would believe VDS's to be far superior to hosted accounts at first glance.

In any case...I 'll rephrase myself: I stand firm in my vehement hatred of VDS's and renounce the crusade!

:D

I think you are a free-spirited person who dare not to be limited by small realms.

I really think that you should hate freevsd more than VDS in general. Maybe you should try an ensim VPS, I think you would be satisfied.

I shall now leave you to indulge in your own hatred.:D
