Gimp vs Photoshop. Which is the better program for web design? I personally find Gimps' jpeg compression quality very good.

I think photoshop is obviously better, but GIMP is free?

Therefore more accessible for less serious web designer, although I personally havn't tried GIMP.

GIMP is free, that's a huge advantage.
Usability wise, Photoshop has the upper edge, but not much.

I would have to say Photoshop as well, as this is one of thee best Softwares out.

I have used gimp many times for other related things, but still end up using photoshop for most stuff..

i've used Gimp, Photoshop and Fireworks.

i definatly prefer fireworks for web graphics.

if its just for web stuff, definalty use the Gimp, its free and as good
as the rest.

Well, I think serious designers will focus on Photoshop while Gimp is possibly ok for casual users.

There's a great solution for someone looking for GIMP with a GUI almost identical to Photoshop's - GimpShop (http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294).

IMO, Photoshop CS beats Gimp by a landslide. No contest.

I did not use PSP for a few years so I am not sure in which state is it now.

Gimp lacks something with WebLayer functionality as seen in Fireworks to be of any use to me for web graphics (ability to save slices and extra information in the image and with with each slice it's name, optimization/export method so you can easy update and export it on later time). This is very important since we gave up on table layouts and never export entire page as a whole but rather one or two slices at a time.

So between Gimp and PSP I would chose Fireworks :) I have Fireworks MX and things might have improved in version 8, but I am not too impressed with PNG image export so I often use gimp to "re-export" some slices.

I've always used Jasc Paint Shop Pro. Why? Well for starters it's cheaper. You can give me that "industry standard" bull all day long, but anything you can do in PS I can do in PSP. Besides, PSP isn't a memory hog like PS, it loads faster, and it has a MUCH better GUI than PS (I honestly hate Adobe's GUI for all of their programs, I hope to god they don't ruin the next version of Flash and Dreamweaver). I use Fireworks a lot too because it's great for doing shapes, drop-shadows, text, text, and gradients. I probably use 50/50 for PSP and FW. Sorry, just never got on the PS bandwagon. I can use it though, because the terminology is all the same for any graphics program, I just find it much more logical and don't have to worry about it crashing in the middle of working with a file.

I disgaree that everything one can do in PSP, another can do in PS. That's simply not true. I've been able to do countless things in PS, some of which PSP wishes it could do.

Fireworks is easier to use than Photoshop but there is much less that you can do.

Gimp is free, so how can you compare it with Photoshop which costs over $600?

Gimp is fine only if you run it under Linux. Under win it crashes.

Whoever mentioned Fireworks - that's another good one. That & Phtosohop both beat the other.
