View Full Version : is EuroVPS a slow host ?
kpmedia 06-13-2006, 06:44 AM I'm in the USA. At least 75% of my site users will be from the USA. EuroVPS has a reseller plan that would work, and it has the respected level of support (according to WHT members) I'm currently not getting with my own host.
When I try to ping or tracert them (eurovps.com), I get 150-200ms returns. On my current host and others I know of in the USA have 10-60ms returns.
Does anybody in the USA use them? What is your site? (PM me, that's fine). Or what speeds do you get from your location?
Since they do not have a trial or refund guarantee, I'm having to ask. I do not want to get stuck with $40 item I cannot use or proves too slow.
I'm not sure if it's just their main site with the problem, or everything of theirs is bad.
In fact, they get the grade of F on this site, for speed:

Excellent support, reasonable pricing, and poor speeds?
Does that sum them up?
Lubby 06-13-2006, 09:53 AM Its probably not that they have slow speeds, it could just be that they have slow speeds to certain parts of the world.
You may want to ask them for a test download, to see what sort of speeds you get there. However it could definitely be an issue worth considering.
ldcdc 06-13-2006, 10:13 AM I'm in Europe (Romania). My pings to US are generally in the ~170 range. EuroVPS is in Europe, and I get to them in ~70ms, so it all seems normal to me. What you're seing is simply the effect of distance.
As ldcdc said: it is just the effect of distance. I am in The Netherlands and have a ping of ~9ms
premium20 06-13-2006, 12:48 PM If you are looking to get 75% of your customers from the US, why don't you look for a US based server or reseller account? That would take care of the speed for you.
kpmedia 06-13-2006, 08:53 PM I have been looking for one in the USA, but they either charge too much (and I'm not talking from a cheapskate perspective either, they are just costly, packages are designed poorly and the license costs cause it), or their support level and knowledge is questionable.
I need a Windows PLESK solution, and those are not all that common.
EuroVPS/Director 06-14-2006, 04:49 AM In fact, they get the grade of F on this site, for speed:

Open DNS servers take off 10 points per server per that test. We have 6 DNS servers, so that's 60 points off according to this test. I am surprised that nobody answered this question earlier on in the post.
psykik 06-14-2006, 05:23 AM yes a bad tool !
it did some test with known global sites. all the .COM's get grade A
while all the TLD versions get F!!!
(like google.com-->A, google.fr -->F, google.be -->F, google...... all F
same for microsoft, msn)
and then my little, note:
I've been hosting my sites (mine and my clients) on US based servers for about 2 years now. I'm now moving everything to europe since my client base is 90% european.
So my advise to you is: if your clientbase is 80% US-based, get a US-based server. It will pay off in the end.
or if you can't find anything close to eurovps's packages (which is possible because they have good prices) then go for it.
just a little note though: be carefull of eurovps and their MSSQL pricing if you use that database a lot. it's quite expensive:
on reseller you get 10 MB
on a vps: 74.50€/mo. extra
EuroVPS/Director 06-14-2006, 05:35 AM be carefull of eurovps and their MSSQL pricing if you use that database a lot. it's quite expensive:
50 cents for every 10MB of MS SQL 2005 is expensive? What is market price for SQL 2005 nowadays?
psykik 06-14-2006, 05:49 AM I'm sorry I don't see it that way.
if you take a vps and you want MS SQL you have to pay 74.50€/mo. additionally
for 50 db's and 5 GB space.
now don't get me wrong here. 50 and 5 GB is A LOT.
but it's not flexible. you still have to pay 74,50 per month extra on that vps package while most clients will use mysql anyway.
(or with asp.net 2.0 I guess more and more people will use ms sql 2005)
EuroVPS/Director 06-14-2006, 06:53 AM So, in this case would it be more interesting if a provider gave SQL space, in 10MB increments alone, rather than a flat fee for a large SQL allocation?
psykik 06-14-2006, 07:31 AM I think so yes. because now you have huge amount of space (5GB) and paying 74 euro's for it. (which is not a lot for 5 GB let me emphasis this)
add this fee to the monthly vps fee and you have more than 120 euro's. that's quite expensive (considering you want mssql of course!)
a more flexible way of payment with a standard allocation which can be increased would I think be better for companies. (like design firms and so on...)
(that way they can bill it directly to their clients)
kpmedia 06-14-2006, 01:05 PM Some good info here, I appreciate all the feedback.
Google.com gets A+ and google.ca gets an F ?? That's funny. I'd never used that test before, guess there is more to simple numbers and letter grades.
I think the MSSQL pricing is fine. Sure, I wish it was free or included. But it's not, and the price is extremely fair. Thanks for the added note, but hopefully this won't be threadjacked to that topic. I'm fine with pricing, my concern was speed to the USA.
Been talking to friends in Europe about things, testing out things. It's not as bad as I thought. More testing to do.
From my limited contact to date with EuroVPS, I will definitely say they get an A+ for communication and support. Very nice people, very helpful so far.
..
kpmedia 06-16-2006, 04:47 AM Just an update on the speed of EuroVPS, it's a little slower from MY OWN HOUSE, but other places (customers, friends, relatives), it does not appear to be an issue. I experience the same speeds with some other sites hosted in Europe, ones I use fairly regularly and have no real complaints, still loads good enough.
And as I've read and heard since I made this thread, ping speed is not the only factor in how fast a server moves data. While I ping in the 175-200ms range on average, compared to 10-25ms for something in my own home town, the speed delay is very small.
Once the browser cache grabs images for later visits, its even less of an issue.
Thanks to all who responded to me, PMs, etc. It helped.
