.. and they keep on coming ..
There is plenty of good, solid, correct information in this domain forum provided by knowledgeable members, but many people are also reading this who don't yet have a lot of experience, and so this is aimed at informing them, not those that know better..
I received some spam today from a fellow who offered, among other things, to sell me domains for $6.00 per year if I purchased 500.
No doubt others here received the same or similar spam from this person. I know another customer of ours also received the same offer.
This person claimed to be selling domains via the Registerfly, Enom or Stargate system. He further claimed that he was able to purchase domains from Enom at $5 on the basis that he purchased several thousand domain years in a 12 month period.
All of this is complete rubbish and while there is always the chance that this guy has the mother of all philanthropic tendencies and is selling at a loss, I suspect he is simply trying to steal money from those that believe his scam through not being aware of the basic structure of domain registrations and fees.
I'm not sure if there's any point in typing this persons name here, but in the interests of not seeing something further erode public confidence in this business, there is no way that any legitimate registrar/reseller can sell domains for less than around $6.20 to $6.50, which domains include full DNS services and a browser based management interface UNLESS they are selling at a loss and/or are bundling it with another service which may make up any difference in price.
Enom sell 'name only' domain accounts, which have no use at all other than to horde names, for which they charge $5.99 per domain year, but these would require a further payment before they are 'active' and able to be used for anything at all including email.
I'm sure most people would check this out before paying any money to this guy, but just in case, and because I am pissed off, I mention it here..
