Hi,

I have seen many hosts use ICQ for support. How good it is for the purpose ? and isn't it a magnet for hackers and back doors troubles ? espcially that it would be use off your office network ?

I use ICQ a lot - and it's really great!

I haven't had any problems with hackers nor backdoors - however I do not use the official Mirabilis ICQ.

I provide ICQ support too as an option - clients love it normally

I use Trillian.

The only reason I have for using Trillian is, that is free of advertising and makes it possible to be on ICQ, MSN, AOL, IRC, etc. with the same client. Also it has a "Secure IM" mode, where it transfers messages encrypted (only works with Trillian clients, though).

I have heard of icq numbers being hijacked though...

Yup. Too true. Mine was hacked, damit. Now I'm 111515450; not exactly easy to remember.

If you wanted to look extremely professional you could find someone with an extremely low number and buy it from them. What's the lowest, isn't it 1000 or so?

I should hope that nobody here is running their company like that in the first place ;). Those guys sounded evil, heh. Like someone mentioned regarding that post at FC, it's in the ICQ agreement that the application shouldn't be used for sending very sensetive information.

Yes, I use that too and the secure IM mode IS very helpful since word goes around that messages can be read or even are by 3rd parties.

The problem we have came across in using any kind of Instant Messenger support is the management part. Key this in your mind. You are on the phone and some instant messages you. now you are trying to concentrate on 2 things at once. If you don't get too many phone calls then go for it, or if you have someone who is not on the phones all the time, have them handle the ICQ stuff.

beats me why your talking about security of a system that does not encrypt? Without encryption it's as secure as the routers your connection is passing through.

Anyone have trouble with MSN when using trillian? For awhile I haven't been able to sign in to MSN via trillian..The rest of the IM's work fine.

Woman are supposively better at spelling too, or so I've heard.

I have had no trouble with MSN through Trillian. Been up and running every day, all day for months.

When I load up trillian, msn signs on and off ever 3 or so seconds about 5 times, then just stays signed off. Can't get it to work.

what I really like about them is how they can act as an E-Mail. So when you are offline, you can recieve messages from customers etc. But Trillian is pretty good to use instead of the actual ICQ because, #1 no annoying popups when you load like AIM and ICQ and it is pretty good to be able to support 5 methods of IM service
