Hi,

The provider I’ve chosen for my dedicated server (tranxactglobal) allows me to specify partition information. The HDD is 40Gb, does anyone have any advice on whether I should just stick with the default configuration or specify sizes of various partitions?

- EDIT - For those that don't know tranxactglobal, this is a Linux server (RedHat 7.2 with no control panel to be specific). - END EDIT -

Advice on how people usually choose this would be greatly received.

I'm opting for a straight RedHat 7.2 install without control panel.

I may install a web based panel at a later date but that shouldn't affect the partition choices.

I would imagine the aim is to maximise /home but I may not have considered everything.

It would depend on your choice for Control Panel.. CPanel would want /home as the biggest partition whereas PLESK would want /usr as the biggest.

If it's a 40GB HDD I would say:

/ 2GB
/boot 45MB
/usr 4/5GB
/var 4/5GB
/home the rest GB's

Yes it will affect the partiton choices because you may not have a choice depending on how you partition now.

If you think you may add a control panel later then why not have just a single partition? You can specify /home, /usr, /etc symbolically then.

When I refer to a web based panel, I meant something like webmin - not a hosting control panel.

A single partition is not a good idea. I would also specify a /tmp partition as well. The partitioning really depends on intended uses and is always a difficult one to determine for someone else, it's the kind of process you refine over time.

The default RedHat partitioning scheme (for servers, not desktops) is adequate for most purposes.
