Hey all,
I'm contimplating doing a web hosting blacklist web site. Does anyone have any good web hosting horror stories that they wouldn't mind me sharing with the world?

do a search on Shang and Tacid. That was one of the most horrific epics I've ever read.

Sam.moses:

Why is your "web site broken"?

Cast not the first stone?

The one reason I went to a paid provider: coolfreepages.com

This free site was absolutely the worst I ever had.

My forum was deleted just like that, as was my MySQL database.
Support was also nonexistant.
My site was down for hours on end, for days on end.

Now I am very happy with my current provider, Sonichost. My forum has been lightning fast, as well as my entire site. The support was immediate (within 15 minutes each time I had a prob) when transferring my forum from my old provider (not CFP)

edit: no images allowed I guess :D

Kikko networks would be another one for the list (forgot what their new name is, like that's gonna make them any better), just do a search for them.

Yeah. AvailHosting.

Without warning, they thew in the towel.

There's plenty of stuff on this board that's already been said about it.

I personally can't believe that they went to perform an upgrade on a live machine ... without at least making an image backup so they could restore in a heartbeat.

Don't for get the infamous Pagecreators, I was one of the lucky few who actually paid by check for their services and avoided the 10,000 dollar over-usage credit card charge on my 30 kilobyte website with the url www.noonewilleverseethissitebecauseitishiddeninobscurity.com

Is this really needed? I mean it's not there fault you did not make a backup they had a rash of bad luck which can happen to anyone, I honestly feel bad for them everyone makes mistakes as they did and as you also did by not backing up your own data.. I would be happy that I got a refund as 98% of companies that pack it up give nothing back pre-paid or not..

Actually, I had backups. Perhaps you haven't heard the addage about what happens when you assume?

As for feeling sorry. No mistakes? Really, you think it is ethical for an individual to collect money for services rendered, then not take all the necessary efforts to protect the assets of his/her customers?

No professional in the computer industry I know of would ever implement a hardware or an operating system upgrade with out a hot swap, let alone a fresh backup. Nor would any pro worth his/her salt effect such a change without first had experience making sure they can restore production data.

Seeing as you are a host (www.okihost.com), I would figure you understand these things. Please tell me you do! If you don't, perhaps you need to get busy with making effective backups, rehearsing restorations and mapping your contigencies.

No, my mistake was assuming, there's that word again, that Jeremy knew what he was doing.

My other mistake was believing his advertising, that EFFECTIVE backups were performed every night.

As Chris Rock might say, why do people brag about things they are _supposed_ to do?

"I take care of my kids!"
"I ain't never been in jail!"

I agree that it is too bad that Avail went out of business, but I think there are steps that could have been taken to mitigate the inconvenience to their customers. I am speaking as a customer who has had to change hosting companies twice in the last 6 months!

The SSL/TLS-aware Apache webserver was
successfully installed on this website."

Haze your site looks pretty cool, only wish I knew about it before 2mhost ripped me off. You should start a SUPPORT FORUM people like to login and check out what customers are posting about needs and wants from you and how you handle it.

HostOnce are an absolute scam, and ***** don't have a good reputation either (in fact they were blocked by this forum, which is why I had to put spaces between the name).

And I myself had a terrible time with Webhosting.com (server down, slow support, disk full, CGI scripts breaking and having to be re-uploaded.. you name it and it happened).
