Everyone someone sends a mail message and they enter a wrong email or the email does not exist, the message gets bounced to me! How do I make it so it bounces back to the users account letting them know and not me?

I use WHM/cPanel..

In WHM under Server Contacts > Change System Mail Preferences

I found it to say forward all that mail to root (me). What should I put instead of root so it gets bounced back to the sender?

Thanks! :smash:

Will that make it bounce back to the user?? I don't want to make it go to "nobody" cause then it stays in the "Mail Queue Manager" to nobody@server.com

I want it to inform the user who sent the mail message that the email they sent it to did not get it.

Hello Lucky,

One option in cPanel email setup is to change your "catch-all" email addy from the account's primary email addy (the default) to a new addy that you create, e.g., junkbox@yourdomain.com

While respecifying the new email address (junkbox@yourdomain.com) as your catch-all, in the "Mail Manager Main Menu" section under "Default Address" you can enter :blackhole: to discard all incoming unrouted mail or :fail: no such address here to bounce it. If you wish to create multiple addresses as your catch-all, just seperate them with a comma (,) when entering them in the "to:" box.

This will send all unrouted mail (that is mail addressed to your domain but not having an alias that you have already created for your domain) to the junkbox mailbox and will either delete it or bounce it to the sender depending on which option you entered above.

You have to set up the new address first so that when you enter either of the two options to delete or to bounce that they will not affect your primary email address for that account.

Now, on a further note, if you are receiving bounced email from addresses that you know you did not send to, you may have someone using your domains SMTP port to do their dirty work on your domain and reputation. There is an interesting article addressing this issue online. Perhaps when I get my first 5 posts logged in, I can come back and post the link here for you. Or perhaps you can do a Google search on "openspf" or "mail spoofing."

I hope that helps Lucky! :wavey:
