ok

Obviously I am a noob.

I have seen several threads throughout this site highlighting the difference between VPS & Resellers.

Can some just be frank an to the point.

1. What are the Real benefits of a VPS over a Reseller/shared hosting.
2. What additional work is required to "monitor" a vps, especially since most apparently come managed?

You answers will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Nastro,

Main point: VPS has root access. Resellers do not.

2. What additional work is required to "monitor" a vps, especially since most apparently come managed?

You would still have to monitor your sites and the CPU/memory resources of your VPS carefully. However, if it comes 'managed' there's really not much extra work you have to do.

Hi Nastro,

Other opinions will vary - however, I do not believe a VPS is an adequate replacement for a reseller account.

VPS solutions have their place, and they can be very useful and effective, however, not, in my opinion, as a replacement to a reseller account.

A clustered reseller solution, where your accounts and services are spread across multiple servers is a much more reliable and useful solution for a reseller. H-Sphere, Plesk and Helm support this if the providers have configured it as such.

This is my thoughts as well. Most persons seem to think otherwise, which is why I am asking what is it that I am missing?

I dont think you are missing anything at all. I believe that those who feel that a reseller to VPS is an adequate solution have had negative experiences in a reseller environment or have been on overloaded environments, where the lure of fixed and guaranteed resources, as limited as they may be, become attractive to them.

However, I have always felt that in order to provide a mutually beneficial reseller service, you must be able to provide flexibility, multiple services on different platforms, sharing of large resource pools and instant scalability. These are all features that aren't really inherent in a VPS.
