should i install X on a web server to speed up installation?

I dun think you would be using X at all? I dun think you would use it if were a rempote server.

If you never used apache, sendmail, wu-ftpd, etc, it might be good for you to install X for your first time... but if you know how to configure your software, X will simply take space and RAM & CPU when running... thus useless.

But can you remotely work on X-Windows?

Yes you can work remotely with X if you have the right software. ReflectionX for Windows is one way to do it. I am pretty sure that there's a way to do the same thing under Linux, but I don't know exactly how. I hope this helps.
