Why don't you contact Dell and have them fix it. It should fall under the guarentee, at least if it's less than a year old...

I've got an Inspiron 3700, and some of the keys aren't working anymore after 2 years of use (3 keys to be exact, 2 letters and a number key) :(

I'd get it fixed, but it probably won't be cheap and there's no more guarentee on it...

Probably didn't see my other post..but I'm not the original owner, and the eBay seller can't find the original owner.

It pisses me off so much too, worked for about 30 days..loved it.

Whats the service tag on the machine?

I have bought several used laptops (compaq, NEC, etc) for my friends ... when I need support, they never asked for the original owner. All they need to know is the S/N of the laptops.

So, why don't you call dell and give it a try?

cheers,

Damn.. Already at $406, I've seen this problem on a few other dell laptops, I was hoping to get a steal :D

Were you able to fix it?

I've read the forums..and a lot of other people have had the same problems..and dell just replaces the motherboard.

Hmm, according to Dell's database, Original 1 year warranty is still good till 08/30/2002

I've fixed a few.... It helps that we distrubted Dell desktops directly from dell :D

Sometimes its the port the ac adapter plugs into, it gets loose from people just yanking the plug out and it breaks the solder...

It can also break the jack... Just have to look at it, and test the AC adapter, just need a volometer for that...

BTW: Not saying this isn't a good deal, 400 bucks is a steal, I just don't have the extra cash for it :D

I've actually cracked it open and took a look at it..it didn't look like it was loose and coming off..but I dunno....

Yeah, usually kinda hard to see, you just fix it like you would cold solder joints, and reheat it...

I wouldn't suggest it unless you've done it before :D

Its faster for Dell to just replace the entire mobo than go into breaking the soldering iron out :D

Haha, I bet it is..but I called dell, and Out of Warranty (even though it is!! ), it costs $269 just to send it in..the motherboard costs $700!!

Yeah, their prices can kinda seem like your wallet is being raped....

How did they say it was out of warranty?

I started a DPS order with that service tag, "if" it wasn't valid, I couldn't order anything against it.

They might be giving you the run around

---edit---
Sorry, slip of typing, it shows up as under warranty. meant to say "if it wasn't valid"

Only time an in warranty machine is denied service is when it has been reported stolen. which seems to be the case here.

To save money, the original owner could have ordered it without a warrenty....

Its not advertised on their site, but you can do it...

No No No...

It IS under warranty. It was bought in August 2001, and the warranty is good until August 2002.

However, I am NOT the original owner. I bought it off of eBay, from a big seller. He turned out to be a pawn shop. I tried to get the original owner from him, but he never responded...

if you will, never buy anything from

fastcashpawn I believe is his name...

Pawn shops, at least where I live, are required by LAW to keep records....

I've talked to DELL over and over...trying to get anything out of them..trying to get them to call the original owner..but I pretty much knew that they wouldn't...

I just have bits and pieces of who the original owner is from what the different techs slipped up and said....but not enough :(

Odds are the machine was either reported lost/stolen and the guy unloaded it on Ebay

CobaltConn

..probably not..

Maybe the person that sold it to the pawnshop guy, but it did come from a pawnshop..

AND the original owner is in the same area as the pawn shop

but, none of this really matters :(, I got screwed

its really going to make me think twice about eBay

its good until something bad happens to you
