View Full Version : Google links..where are they?
frenchrl 06-07-2006, 06:08 PM When using the google keywords tool and selecting the "link popularity option" I have 136 links showing in MSN and Altavista but 0 for Google?
Using googles touchgraph browser I get the same thing, no links?
If I do a link;www.mysite.com I will get all the sites that are linking to me (about 3 pages of them) . If I use link;htp://www.mysite.com I get 1?
I am just learning about all of this so I figure I did something wrong somewhere?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-Rich
NE-Andy 06-07-2006, 06:11 PM try
site: http://www.yoursite.com
:)
frenchrl 06-07-2006, 06:32 PM try
site: http://www.yoursite.com
:)
Using the 2 tools I mentioned above the result are the same
0 links in Google, I know they are their, I think...
Unlike at the other major search engines, the link: command at Google does not return all of the indexed links. So the fact that you don't see them doesn't mean they're not actually in Google's index.
frenchrl 06-08-2006, 09:11 AM Ok, as long as i know it's somewhat normal and my site is getting indexed properly I'm ok with that.
Amdac 06-08-2006, 03:43 PM You should be using link:www.yoursite.com, not link;www.yoursite.com.
Fixago 06-08-2006, 04:33 PM I'm sure it was just a typo :) What's the difference between using:
link:mysite.com AND link:www.mysite.com
Won't Google still know what you mean, I did it on my site and got 7 more pages when I removed the "www" part, and I never type in the "www" for any of their tools, e.g. site or link.
I missed that in the original message, but yeah... if you're using a semicolon you're doing a search for pages containing the word "link" and your domain name. It has to be a colon.
I also missed the question about different results whether using "www" or not. That's a potential problem, and the best approach is to implement a 301 redirect to send requests for whichever version you don't want to the one you prefer, and to the extent you can control links try to keep them (and every reference you make on or to your own site) all the same.
Fixago 06-08-2006, 04:53 PM What are the advantages to having your site redirect to your preferred method, e.g. I prefer using www.mydomain.com compared to mydomain.com, it just feels naked without it :D
frenchrl 06-08-2006, 05:13 PM If I use just a colon I get this:
"Your search - link:www.mysite.com - did not match any documents". I get the same results with link:mysite.com
So, apparently somehting is wrong, any ideas?
Amdac 06-08-2006, 06:25 PM Is it a fairly new site? Google hasn't done any updates for a couple months now.
Fixago 06-08-2006, 07:32 PM Well if you aren't pulling any pages, that just means you aren't in the index. Did you submit your site? Do you have a robots.txt file? Are you linking to other pages in your website (internal links)? If it's a new site though, you're going to have to give it some time, Google will get around to it eventually :)
Every try Google Sitemaps?

Yes, it's fairly new. I did submit it and I just added a robot.txt file last week. It looks like it's just a waiting game which makes me feel better. I can wait, no problem.
Sitemaps, no I have not, I will look into it though.
I really appreciate the input guys!

Fixago 06-08-2006, 10:06 PM Yeah, if it's new then you just gotta give it some time. It sucks, but hey, what can ya do ;)
frenchrl 06-09-2006, 10:35 AM Bad news, I think. According to sitemap (thanks fixago) I was indexed yesterday and I still get nothing returned with the link:mysite.com or link:www.mysite.com command? Oddly enough if I just do a Google search for mysite name I get about 9 pages of links to mysite?
From what I can tell my site indexed well, I looked at what Google had cached and it is my current home page.
I am officially and completely confused now, nothing unusuall but...
NE-Andy 06-09-2006, 10:41 AM Sitemaps for google is nice, you may also want to look into yahoo's sitemap thing here (http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request)
Well if you aren't pulling any pages, that just means you aren't in the index. No it doesn't. The "link:" command returns pages that link to yours, not your own pages. But as I mentioned before, Google doesn't display all of the indexed links. Generally if you get nothing returned in response to that request it's because the pages that link to you aren't considered authoritative enough algorithmically to make the cut. Basically, don't worry about it (it doesn't indicate that there's any problem with your site) but try to get some better links.

That makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up for me JayC.
I appreciate all the help guys
