View Full Version : Cobalt control panel versus Cpanel/Plesk

I know this sorts of questions come up a lot, but I did a search and didn't see anything that quite covered this.

Thinking about leasing a dedicated server, trying to work out whether to go for a Cobalt Raq, or a low end linux box. Raqs seem to be quite a bit cheaper. On the other hand, they come with their own control panel.

If I got a "real" server, I could use a Plesk or whatever, but then I'd need to *PAY* for it, which is obviously a Bad Thing. :D Of course, if this all works out, I should have plenty of cash to buy expensive control panel licenses (well, so goes the plan, anyhow!). But until then, I don't, so I'm wondering how bad the Raq control panel really is. ;)

Whats the interface on a Raq 3 compared CPanel/Plesk? Both from the point of view of the admin (me), but also for the end user (adding email accounts)? I'm sure that most people will think CPanel or Plesk (or whatever) is best, I'm just wondering if the Cobalt interface is good enough...

Thanks!

Have you check cobalt's website for demo, so you can see it for yourself?

www.cobalt.com

Similarly, ensim, cpanel, and plesk all have demos.

Hmmm, thanks for that, I'd looked at Cobalts site, but hadn't seen anything other than the sysem admin demo, not the site admin or user level demo. Was looking in the wrong place. :(

Anyhow, looks like there's no support for resellers or multi-domain hosting accounts? Also, no support for mySQL databases? Or have I missed something?

Looks like the Cobalt Raq interface would sort of work, but not long term, and I'm guessing migrating a buch of accounts from a Raq to a server running Plesk (or whatever) isn't going to be too fun. Too bad, cause when you count the cost of a "real" control panel, Raqs are a lot cheaper.

Cobalt software does not have much that would support resellers or anything of that nature. It just admins the box and that is it.

The new Raq 5 control panel has an option that allows you to create other admin, which could probably be used as a reseller solution.

I'm just wondering is it possible to upgrade from a raq4 to raq 5?
