This is a question that really only UK members might be able to answer...
Basically it's looking as if I may have to move out into the sticks away from any cable providers and definitely away from the nearest aDSL exchange so the only other option that seems available is that of Satellite access through BT.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience of this particular service.. I know that BT as a whole tend to suck the hind teat off a donkey at the best of times but if anyone has any feedback or alternatives then I'm all ears.
Cheers.

I have also been looking at BT Sat, i live out in the sticks in England also! We are currently using, Beam Solutions Satalite, were getting some pretty good speeds with it also, what you have to remember with satalite is that you have alot of lag, downloading is great, but viewing web pages and be, and is very slow!

bt are expensive but you know they arent going anywhere. try tiscali, they are piloting their scheme and its going to be cheaper. but expect massive lag on any service:)

What sort of lag times are we talking here?

yeah acceptable for browsing:) the company a friend was talking to were suggesting it only adding about 160 to the ping but to be honest i cant see that, i would have guessed at 500ms at least. it would be fine for browsing, downloading stuff etc, just not a solution for gamers, it might be a little annoying for ssh, if you hadnt mentioned uploading (youll prolly only get 150k upstream max) i would have suggested one way satelite combined with single channel isdn on an unmetered package, cheaper then two way, and would knock out a large amount of lag on the upstream. altho isdn would need to be removed at cost to yourself if adsl ever became an option. but ftp and browsing should be fine.

Admittedly I'm thinking along the lines of an unmetered phone line as backup but there's simply no unmetered ISDN that I know of that's going to make it possible on that score...
As for aDSL coming anywhere near where I'll be... I imagine there's more chance of Lands End getting it first ;)

most 0808 friaco deals support 64k isdn afaik, the only difference then would be 27 ish a month line rental but there are weird bt sums that rebate a lot of the extra cost against calls etc.
