I have a linux server and can afford to run that in colo.
Linux software is free so there isn't a problem.

BUT

I want to run a windows server, but i can't afford all the software and hardware on my own.
What i propose is.
Arround 10 to 20 people share the cost of getting a server, all the software and control panel.
Each person will get a certain % of the biz;
i.e.
say 10 people agree
then everyone gets 10% of the company and shares 10% of the cost's.
Then we set up a small page selling accounts and the profits are split equaly or go to pay off the server ect.

As i look at it the costs are as follows;
server arround $2500 for dual p3 ect,
Control panel arround $500 for hosting controller,
SQL server not sure on cost please reply with cost,
Win2k server arround $800 ish not quite sure,
components arround $1000 to $2000 ish,
Colo arround $3600 ish for loads of bandwidth.
http://www.wholesalecolo.com/special2.html
Thats 10Mbit :-) arround 3100 Gig per month.
Thats about $8000 ish but may be less.

say there were 10 people that would be $730 per year per person.

say there were 10 people that would be $365 per year per person.

Thats for the first year but it would be ALOT less after a year.

Thats arround the same as a normal reseller account but with a share in the company and you get to have control over the company ect. If we sell accounts we may even be able to make that back :-)

After the first year it could go to arround $250 per year per person for 10 people or $125 per year per person.

This is just an idea i had.

If anyone is interested please email me;
jbuckle@clara.co.uk

If anyone has any more pricing info or other ideas for control panels please replay.

If say 10 people did buy in to start this windows hosting company support would be very very good for the clients because there would be 10 people to share the support.
This would also mean that the company could expand :-)

Type of people we are looking for;
Graphic designers,
Web designers,
Server admins,
Writers (for FAQ's ect)
Programmers (asp, php, cfm ect),

Thanks

thanks for your email jbuckle

this sounds like a good idea. I was thinking of running a really small scale server here over ADSL (yes i know about the crappy upstream).

I've nearly outgrown my reseller account with fasthosts and i'm looking to colocate with someone somewhere but i'm not sure if i can afford it just yet.

The prices you have quoted are probably just a little expensive for me at the moment.

Anyone know how much SQL server is?

Those prices i have quoted are the top of the range and i wouldn't use those if i had to buy it with less then 10 people.
I can't afford the server and colo on my own but with one maybe 2 other people i can afford it.
I hate fasthosts reseller :-(

The server price should be nothing over 2,000, unless you're looking to upgrade features (components price?)

Something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2025882791

this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2027884899

Or this (a little slower, but a lot cheaper.):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2026626366

should more than suffice, with a memory upgrade to 1 GB for the first one (I'd recomend the second or third deal).

What is "components", spare cpus, and memory?

3.0 MBPS should be more than enough (which works out to 179* 12 = 2148) Special two offers 3.0 MBPS, not 10 MBPS (at least not as far as I know)

A couple other things to think about: If you're colocating in Miama one of your main personel should be in Miami.

Just by getting a dual 800 MHZ, and 3 MBPS instead of ten (which I didn't see, and expect to cost *a lot*) you save 2,000 bucks, which is the equiv of 10 people saving $200.
