View Full Version : When do you know it's right to merge?

I'm in a dilemma right now. I started <<< a domain >>> about 2 months ago with my one buddy. It's grown pretty decent, but seeing how I'm the main financial supplier in the company, we were looking at taking on another partner into the company.

At the time of starting up <<< a domain >>>, the company I helped out before wanted to hire me back and give me a good share of the company (50%) since I helped develop it from the start.

I kindly rejected that offer even though it was tempting. The main reason I did that is because when I told them I had to concentrate on my university degrees and that I couldn't do anymore day-to-day managing, they said they'll keep me posted via email or phone if anything major happens or if they needed my opinion on something. When I came back 3 months later, I found out they attempted to change OS and pretty much everything I worked very hard on. They lost about 70 clients and were back to where they started. I didn't want to just ditch them and start my own company, but on the other hand I felt betrayed that they didn't consult me; felt like they ditched me.

Now that you have some background knowledge of what happened, you should have a better idea on how to answer my question. Should I merge with this company or should I look for a third partner?

The advantage of merging is I would get more employees to work with, more resources and pretty much an instant expansion of two locations and several boxes. If I were to get another partner though, I would be able to surpass what they've become no problem.

What do you say? Go with the merger or stick it out and keep searching for another partner?

Thanks guys.

What does your "gut" tell you is the right choice?

Personally, I despise working with "partners", because there will always be difference of opinion and animosity between them.

I was a partner in a large company once, and after several years, I offered for them to buy me out. Best decision I ever made. I would NEVER partner with anyone again, for any reason.

You are better to "partner" with your bank by giving them a good business plan to get the capital you need to execute your new business.... by yourself. (ie: As the sole owner.)

Stay away from the <<< a domain >>>, company :) If they forgot to consult you once, chances are they'll do it again.
