View Full Version : reseller package or dedicated server
babrees 05-25-2006, 07:29 AM I currently have a reseller's package with site5 and am now looking to change host.
Am considering whether or not to go with a dedicated server but have no idea what that entails or how it works. Can somebody help me on this or is there a url explaining it?
chamelion 05-25-2006, 07:50 AM maybe go up to a VPS first?
CyberHostPro 05-25-2006, 07:51 AM Hi
how much disk space do you use at the moment? how many websites do you host?
It is not easy to handle dedicated server until you are ready enough to do so.
If you have few domains, just stay in the reseller until you grow.
You can also provide the info what Chris asked from you so members can help you decide.
Thanks.
GigabitONE 05-25-2006, 08:37 AM unless you go for a managed server. but if you present reseller package can support your current active account then a VPS is more than enough.
babrees 05-25-2006, 09:49 AM Thanks everybody. At the moment I have about 44 sites. I have no idea how much space they take as they are ALL down and have been since Sunday  (see my post at bottom of http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=515897&page=2)
OK - I think a server is a no-no for me
What about VPS? Can you tell me anything more on it please?
[edit] what about the difference between linux and unix? I have always been on Linux but the host I am currently looking at offers Unix or Windows
AvailNetworks 05-25-2006, 10:43 AM oh wow that is pretty bad. A vps is a virtual dedicated server, and you can get them in a variety of speeds and requirments to suit your needs. With a vps generally you will need management too unless it is included. Check out this page for Steadfast Networks offerings which are actually fully managed too

vps sounds about right for where you are at, making the leap from reseller to dedicated is a prety big price gap. If you can swallow $200+/mo for a full server and management then it may be time but if you are looking for a good way to move up without spending all your profit, stick with a vps
babrees 05-25-2006, 11:41 AM Thanks!
It's now over 24 hours since I opened the ticket with Site5 and I still have no access to my sites, so I am definitely going to change hosts. Unfortunately I have only been with them since January so will lose 6 months hosting by changing, but that's how it goes I suppose.
I am still unsure whether or not to go reseller or vps. I would prefer to go to a UK host. Despite stating 24/7 support I find that the time difference does make a difference. The one I am currently looking at seems to be offering a better deal for reselling than with a vps, so...... we'll see :-)
morehost 05-25-2006, 12:02 PM you can even check vps at servint.com.. i have been them for long.. and i am pretty happy with their services...
dimitar 05-26-2006, 04:22 PM Hi babrees, on which server are your sites in Site5 ? i'm on dianthe and don't have any problems.
Orc Webhosting 05-29-2006, 12:02 PM If a host says Unix hosting, in many cases they are offering Linux hosting. Hosts that offer *nix usually state what OS, like Solaris or FreeBSD.
I absolutely wouldn't recommend a VPS, it will be easily slower and more complicated to manage than a reseller account. A VPS is good if you need root access/custom system software and don't have the funds for a dedicated server, but it's not the middle way between a shared reseller account and a dedicated server as it is marketed to be. Speed-wise, a $50/month VPS is often slower than a $10/month shared account.
premium20 05-29-2006, 01:03 PM If your sites are not consuming awful levels of bandwidth or CPU, I would advise to stick with reseller hosting. VPS and Dedicated require a lot of skills and management.
babrees 05-30-2006, 02:19 AM Hi babrees, on which server are your sites in Site5 ? i'm on dianthe and don't have any problems.
I'm on lapetus with a reseller account and nauplius with a multi-site account. There haven't been too many problems but when there have been the support to me is terrible. With my very first problem they frankly didn't believe me until several support mails and tech people and MANY hours later. Most of the time they simply do not read my first ticket properly, so they ask a question whereby the answer is in my first mail. Thereby they waste a lot of time.
With my latest problem and all my sites down, from opening my ticket to closing was 27½ hours. It could've been cleared up within 1 if those in support actually read my first ticket and were able to think for themselves.
babrees 05-30-2006, 02:35 AM Thanks everybody.
I was looking for a host in the UK. One was simply too expensive. With another the live help provided was somewhat abrupt then asked me for a contact number so somebody could contact me to discuss my requirements. I gave it and they merely hung up that was last Thursday - nobody has rung me. Jeez don't companies know about customer relations anymore?
So I think I shall stay where I am for now, the main problem is their support is not good and takes unnecessary hours to sort a prob out.
dhcart 05-30-2006, 07:39 AM Hi babrees. We have two reseller accounts on Site5 and hundred and hundred domains. We were some problems, too. But they had helped us and the problems had resolved. We glad from the servers at this time. The servers had placed on Liquidweb's data center. I could not find another reliable company. Because most of them have some problems or have insufficient features. I don't recommend a VPS if you'll host a lot of domains. Because the server resources maybe insufficient. I recommend Liquidweb's dedicated servers. Their solutions is little expensive but you don't need more knowledge to use it. Their servers managed and they help to you for everything. I had tryed to buy a server from them last week but there was a problem on their order form. Good luck.

It eroded confidence of customers (like you) and overall affected reputation.
