Eyy guys,

Well I have a question. I just got one of these nice free hosts (awardspace.com), which is a pretty nice offer 200mb, 5 gig datatransfer. But in order to use the ftp server I need a domain name (I can make supdomains and use it, so my site is in use wesleydegast.awardspace.com), but I ofcourse want a normal domain (wesleydegast.com). So I can put a phpbb forum on it, nothing more fancy.

So do you guys know a place where I can register a domain name for free or something, so I can use the ftp client and put the forum on it.

What? $8 is too much money for you? LOL

Never heard of such thing of free domain registration without any other subscription attached to it, and anyway a domain it's not that expensive like in the past(30-40$/yr)

There are some (http://www.dot.tk/en/index.html) sites (http://www.freedomain.co.nr/) that hand of kind-of free domain names. I wouldn't touch one... And they may have some strings attached. I've seen one that required some sort of advertisement on the page.

Yahoo and some others are even cheaper than $8.

You're thinking of installing a forum on free hosting provider? Dream on. I'm not trying to be rude, but it's been discussed to death so please do a search. Forums hog server resources. Perhaps strictly for development purposes, but nothing else is possible.

well I'll pay the domain costs.

And for the forum, a phpbb forum is 10meg big. The overal datatransfer on a forum with roughly 130k hits, is 1gig. I checked this with a classmate that has a pretty nice forum himself, so the numbers are correct. So I think the forum is defenitly an option.

No, I'm talking about CPU. Those numbers may very well be correct, but forums do a ton of database queries for every page view. I seríously doubt that any free shared host would run a forum with any traffic.

Then again, there are free forum services such as forumer.com (http://www.forumer.com/).

I use phpbb but since I've installed it, there's been (believe it or not) 8 security updates. There are dedicated sites with punks trying to bring it down (again...believe it or not). You take your chances but I'd suggest another board...unless you wish to update constantly.
