When I run /usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start it says:/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
I am using Apache 1.3.20 on Debian GNU/Linux 2.2.r2
The only module I have is mod_ssl 2.8.4 staticly built

Check your httpd-error.log - it could be something as simple as a typo, and more than likely it will be listed there.

Have you edited httpd file recently?
or done any other installations/editations that could have caused this?
vigor:All i've done is updated from 1.3.9 to 1.3.20
mwatkins:It has errors about OpenSSL/mod_ssl
hmm i disabled mod_ssl and it works :)
but i wanted mod_ssl :(

We can't help you unless you post specific errors.

You might need to recompile mod_ssl for the new Apache.

I remain amazed at how many people are trying to run servers, let alone a hosting business, without even a shred of problem solving ability.
It seems as if the 'appliance' mentality has enveloped the unix world just like long ago happened in the Windows world.
This is not a 'good thing'.

You must rebuild it and compile it back in with your new version of apache. Instructions can be found most likely at the mod_ssl site.

hehe i agree, i get a good chuckle out of some of the questions asked by so called "Webhosting gurus" who have their own companies. I just pity their customers :)
