This is something that I have wondered about for a while. How does a host get their name in the whois in the IP Location field when they don't have their own datacenter/noc?

Yash-JH 05-20-2006, 02:13 AM Well.. you don;t need to own a datacenter to get IP allocations. Read up at ARIN for their requirements. If you are using around 4000 IPs with any provider.. you can get your allocations directly from ARIN. Sometimes, datacenters SWIPE a customer's name on certain IP allocations which are being used by that customer. The customer doesn't own that IP allocation however Mark S 05-20-2006, 02:37 AM Indeed. ARIN is seemingly low on large blocks of ipv4 addresses by now, go figure. You can contact your datacenter about having the block "NetType: Reassigned", as we did with our servers at ThePlanet and similar to what we have done with servers at above.net and other datacenters too. It doesnt make sense to buy blocks from ARIN unless it is important that you are able to take your IPs where you go and/or have full rights of PTR delegation, etc. Skyview 05-20-2006, 02:52 AM Well.. you don;t need to own a datacenter to get IP allocations. Does that mean that you would need to had have 4000 or so IPs to get that changed to your company name? Skyview 05-20-2006, 02:55 AM Indeed. I guess you meant the Server Type field. Yours says: Server Type: sentien-support Your IP Location still says the standard for The Planet: Texas - Dallas - Theplanet.com Internet Services Inc Good to know though. I doubt some of the ones I have seen in that field have that many IP's though, so maybe there's another way. Mark S 05-20-2006, 03:51 AM I dont know what you did a look up on, but thats the hostname of the server, "sentien-support". I am talking about when a lookup is done in ARIN/equivalent.
