View Full Version : I Need A Good Domain With...
OhSoKorny 05-24-2002, 02:21 PM Well, it's happened. My site has gotten too complex for its Geocities address. There's also a lot of bugs on there I feel can only be fixed if I tear the whole thing down and re-build.
But here's the thing... I don't want to use Geocities anymore (unless I absolutly have no choice)
Here's what I want... no, NEED in a company.
1) Able to get an www.websiteadress.com thing. Perferably cheep.
2) No banners or pop up ads.
3) Must be able to edit HTML like in Geocities with an onsite HTML editor. I don't upload FTP. I don't have programs to upload it. I do know HTML, however, and can use any on-site editor.
Actually, that's it. Belive me, I've been looking around the web! But it's so confusing! Help! Help!

By the way... I was just screwin' around, above. OhSoKorny asks interesting questions. But something about the way it's written... well... I dunno. Just something. Not meaning to be critical or to make fun... at least no too much, anyway. But after reading it I felt like maybe it was a setup for a later post elsewhere in these forums announcing a service that does just what he's described. Alas, perhaps I'm too cynical. Sorry.

You're actually looking for two things: 1) a domain name registrar and 2) a host where you can host your domain.
I've used Godaddy.com for my last couple of domain registrations and have been satisfied.
As far as the host goes, you need to specify what you need (besides the no ads requirements and the online editor). You have to think about things like:
- how much storage space do you need,
- how much transfer do you need,
- do you need CGI, PHP, mySQL, ASP, etc.
Once you've determined that, you'll be in a better position to find a host. You could then post your requirements in the Web Hosting Requests forum.

What do you mean when you say you need an on-site editor? GeoCities uses a pretty complex WYSIWYG Java Applet HTML editor. If you are looking for a hosting service that provides this, you may be SOL.
chinchilla 05-24-2002, 05:25 PM There are lots of places you can register a domain, and you don't have to do it at the same place your site will be hosted. One of the cheapest is www.godaddy.com ($8.95/year for .com, .net or .org).
www.dzones.com offers web site hosting and a control panel which allows you to edit your files on the web, no ftp required. I'm sure lots of others do too, but I have an account there so I know about that one for sure. Their prices range from $6.95/month and up. You can find cheaper hosting (more space for less $) if you look around but I've always been happy with DZones... I'm just now switching from them because I wanted a reseller account.
Oh yeah, one more thing... the editor I mentioned that DZones offers is not wysiwyg, it's just a place to edit your html code. There's a separate link which says it goes to a wysiwyg editor in IE 6.0 and above, but I'm not using that so I can't say whether it works or not.
sam.moses 05-25-2002, 03:17 AM Let's see.
I think you need three things:
1. Domain Registrar.
I use Directnic for that. It's mid range in price. You'll find cheaper domains, but few can match the reliability and support that directnic offers. Trust me, I've used almost all of them at one time or another.
2. Web Hosting, Obviously.
The way the industry is heading your OS shouldn't really matter. Anyone who tells you it does in this day and age is a techno-religious zelot.
3. A nuke.
Nuke is a term people use for a premo content management system designed specifically for advanced personal sites and low end portals.
If I were going to use one, and the server platform and features wearen't an issue, I would use FullXML which is available from sourceforge.net or http://fullXML.com.
That one will only run on windows.
For xnix boxes,
I would use php nuke, post nuke, or ravage nuke.
These programs will enable you to create your own data driven web site in five clicks or less, and have features that the Geocities editor would have w*t dreams about. Full XML for example has an admin interface that reminds me of microsoft outlook. Php nuke has more features though. It's a give and take with anything really.
Then there is another possibility:
If all you need to do is upload files and edit them online, you may be better off with an online file management system of some kind. There are thousands of them on the market, and I wouldn't even know where to begin.
Most of these systems allow you to access, upload, and edit files online. Comparable to the Geocities Advanced editor in most cases. Most of these programs are freeware, and can be picked up at your friendly neighborhood freeware links resource/index web site.
Hope that helps.
bellyache 05-27-2002, 09:27 PM i think you can stay with geocities and get an account where you can use your own domain name.
