VeriSign, Inc. will acquire its leading competitor in the market for SSL certificates, GeoTrust Inc., for $125 million in cash, the two companies said today. The deal will solidify VeriSign's dominant position in the market for SSL certificates, which are used to secure web sites for Internet e-commerce. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals, and is expected to close in the second half of this year, the companies said.

Gives Verisign quite the "monopoly" on SSL certificates.

I have no doubt they will raise prices to be in line with their other products, rather than continue to offer the lower end product. Damn, there goes the neighborhood.

I wonder what this means for RapidSSL, which sells the cheap-o certificates from GeoTrust

StarField from Godaddy and Comodo will take niche of discounted SSL Cert's - no worries here, but have to replace few dozens for Geotrust customers.
