View Full Version : KPNQwest Files For Protection From Creditors
BiGWill 05-24-2002, 05:08 AM And another one, after MFN/Above, files for protection...
will this ever stop?
KPNQwest just finished integrating the Ebone/GTS Network ... and now this. I'd say KPNQwest, after the purchase of Ebone, is the biggest player in the European bandwidth market.

apollo 05-24-2002, 10:57 AM Sad news.... what can I say.. companies should think twice before spending money
Walter 05-24-2002, 12:42 PM One of the most interesting things in this situation is:
what will happen to www.strato.de, one of the biggest european hosts which relies on kpnqwest..

Maybe they have some backup plan, but it will be very difficult, just think of their number of servers!
trelane 05-25-2002, 01:28 PM Someone will buy them for pennies on the dollar. I wouldn't be worried, I seriously doubt the network will go away.
BiGWill 05-31-2002, 09:38 AM seems as if you were wrong :/
http://biz.yahoo.com/rc/020531/telecoms_kpnqwest_1.html
"The lack of funding will probably force other operations in KPNQwest's 25,000 km fibre optic network that spans 18 countries to shut down"
bad, bad news.
and a quote from their official press release:
which can be found at kpnqwest.com
"In the interest of maintaining customers’ business and network continuity, the Company is advising customers that they may wish to put in place contingency plans with other providers in the event of a significant deterioration in the performance of the KPNQwest EuroRings network."
looks really bad.
the situation must be really bad, if a company itself says their costumers should look out for another provider ...
this will also affect QWest as they'r losing "their" european backbone ...
Edit:
just found this article here:
so seems as if it's all QWest's fault :D

RobbertC 05-31-2002, 11:20 AM Indeed, it's over for KPNQwest.
They were listed at the stock exchange in Amsterdam, but the trading stopped earlier this day.
All employees where informed today at the headquarters today, and rumorus go that the network will be shut down at 18:30 GMT+1 time.
BiGWill 05-31-2002, 11:24 AM yep, just heard the same
have a look here:
http://www.silicon.com/bin/bladerunner?30REQEVENT=&REQAUTH=21046&1400
it's over.
i'm sure we'll experience some, i just don't hope they'll be big, routing issues ...
all the little companies beeing just single-homed ...
they'll have a hard-weekend/week
RobbertC 05-31-2002, 11:27 AM More rumours:
- KPN said that they will takeover the network in The Netherlands.
- 350 employees in Belgium will lose their jobs.
- In every country, they try to make a group of companies who are willing to take over the network immediately, so there will be no downtime.
Again, this are rumours
Hottest 05-31-2002, 03:45 PM Apparently, AT&T is looking at stepping in:

The company is officially filing for bankruptcy protection, too.

Can some clear up my mind. Does that affect Qwest in the US operation.

no, i don't think so.
but it doesn't look that good with the financial situation of QWest too .... that's probably why they refused to help KPNQWest, because they have to take care of their own problems and can't pump in any more money into their joint-venture with KPN. afaik KPN was willingly to pump-in more money ... but QWest refused that.
read this article here:
http://www.silicon.com/bin/bladerunner?30REQEVENT=&REQAUTH=21046&14001REQSUB=REQINT1=53717
and btw. the KPNQWest network is still running ...
so far knocking on wood :)
but i doubt it will that long anymore.
BiGWill 06-07-2002, 04:24 PM Hey, have a look at the news:
Some Ebone NOC guys took control over the KQ NOC, as some KQ guys wanted to shut the NOC down.
They'r now trying to manage the Network, keeping it up, as long as they can.
Have a look at www.save-ebone.com (http://www.save-ebone.com)
they even sat up a webcam, where you can watch them :)
go there, and give them a bit feedback/support :)
skylab 06-07-2002, 05:58 PM unbelievable.
chello here in europe has had some crazy re-routing issues all of yesterday a0s they've been preparing for this by bringing in new connectivity and whatnot from elsewhere. telia, level3, above, and verio from i'm now seeing on tracerts.
but yeah, insane. i'll be sharing this on another forum or two.
