Phoothsop and Dreamweaver handles all my design concerns for the most part.

About 95% of what I do on a daily basis is handled with Homesite and Fireworks. While FTP software isn't necessary, I find it to be handy, and I use WS_FTP Pro (and Filezilla on another computer - I didn't want to buytwo licenses of WS_FTP Pro ;) ). I keep Photoshop handy, but mostly so I can convert PSD files that sent to me into Fireworks files, so I can get some use out of them :)

well... you have to think about what you want to learn first - interactive or static website building?

if you want static content - then you should use dreamweaver, if you want interactive content, then you should use Flash definitely...

both of this approaches will need a graphic backup, which can be done in photoshop/paintshop/gimp etc.

I use Photoshop 7.0 and notepad. I personally don't like flash because it's much more inconvenient to implement it into a website that is updated many times a day, unless you only use it for banners. It would be even more inconvenient for begginers to flash. It's nice for banners, but in the beggining just stick to photoshop.

I generally use Notepad though lately I've been using Crimson Editor for more and more besides PHP. Sometimes I'll use the old version of FirstPage (not FrontPage though I actually get that with my MSDN subscription so I've tried it out a couple of times and... Well, note that I don't use it?) or I might even load up Dreamweaver but usually only when I'm bored. I've played with NVU lately and that's free as was FirstPage but the new version pretty much bites and certainly isn't worth even the low $70 USD or so in my opinion. It's funny because I've gone out and bought so much expensive software and yet the majority of the time I actually just use the simple things.

For the text editing folks among us (there's nothing wrong with just CTRL + S to save, ALT + TAB to get back to your preview, and F5 to refresh - I find it faster too because my hands are already on the keyboard and mice are a pain) the Crimson Editor is really nice and you can grab it free or even support them if you want.

Dreamweaver(simple word editor like notepad is better if you know html codings) and photoshop should do. Flash sites don't get indexed well by search engines...

Photoshop CS, Photoshop Illustrator & Notepad.

If someone isn't too familiar with coding, you should use EditPlus.

That is why you use XML =D

I've never been one to follow the crowd, I don't use Photoshop or Dreamweaver! I can't see the point of spending nearly £700 on software when I get get all the tools I need for well under £100.

I'm curious - how many people in this thread have purchased their DW/PS licences?

I'm curious - how many people in this thread have purchased their DW/PS licences?I have full licenses for Adobe CS2 and Studio8, along with some other software. The comprehensive tools are necessary, because I handle files that come from other people all the time, and I have to have the software to use those files. But everything I do myself is Homesite and Fireworks (and Illustrator/InDesign for print work, though this is the least of the requests I get).

In my experience up to this point, it's all been worth every penny. One smaller design account covers all of the software, and it's a write-off. It's not that costly an investment!

Flash should never be advised for a beginner. :)

Bah, me... The worst part is I never actually use any of them but they come out with new versions, offer the upgrade at what is a far more rational price, and I keep fooling myself into thinking I'm going to actually learn to use these applications some day.

The worst part is that I'll then buy books for them and they'll sit there and collect dust.

Actually no, the worst part is I'll still use Notepad or FirstPage or some other free application.

Bah...

For the Mac - go with TextMate (http://macromates.com).

And unless you're goin on your own, most companies will require you to have knowledge of Dreamweaver too as lots of sites are built using DWTemplates.

For Design - hands down, photoshop and for vector work - illustrator. No competition there.

Whether you need Flash or not is up to you - what kind of web stuff are you doing? If you're a coder you don't ever really need to touch it unless you're supporting somebody's design with actionscript.

Flash is something you have to dedicate a lot of time to and if that's not going to be your main dish - don't bother.

Focus on the important things - either be a coder or a designer. And NETWORK to find help with everything else.

Text Wrangler, Photoshop and Illustrator. Get a book on XTHML and CSS and write your own clean code.

Anyone tried SciTE (http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html) as a text editor before? How do you like it? After checking out TextMate's website, code-collapsing is starting to look very neat... :)
