View Full Version : Setting Up DNS Servers On My New RaQ's - I'm Confused???
The Thinker 05-23-2002, 09:15 PM Okay, before you tell me to do a search through the forums, I already have and found many resources.
I also read the Cobalt RaQ manual for my RaQ4r's and still am confused.
I think the thing that confuses me the most is that by searching through the previous posts here, there are so many recommendations and so many different sets of instructions to set up DNS services on the RaQ.
Can someone point me to a resource that is clearly defined, reliable, and easy to use?
I am trying to set up DNS services on both RaQ's and also set-up Virtual DNS services for a couple resellers of mine.
If you need any other info to make sure you point me in the right direction, please let me know...
Thanks!

FiberOptic 05-24-2002, 06:10 AM Especially the one of PKGMASTER explains in an easy 5-steps guide how to setup DNS.
The Thinker 05-24-2002, 12:04 PM ...I am looking for some documentation that shows how to set-up Virtual DNS servers on the RaQ's....
It's pretty straight forward on how to set-up a domain in the DNS. What I can't find, it some clear and concise information on how to set-up multiple Virtual DNS servers on the RaQ's and then how to set-up a specific domain to be called off a specific DNS server.....
I am confused, so if my request is confusing, please bear with me and ask questions....
FiberOptic 05-24-2002, 12:26 PM So...
You want to run multiple virtual DNS servers (for resellers) on 1 cobalt ...?
Don't think that is possible :s
The Thinker 05-24-2002, 12:31 PM I could have sworn that I had read in a few post in the search area that it was possible.
I will look for those again and point them out.
My problem is, if I remember right, that there were three different answers to the same question, so I don't know what route to take.
Anyway, I will post a link when I find the topic again...

Those links both make it "appear" that it should work. Does anyone know if this actually worked, because everything I try, won't work. But maybe I am just messing up one little step and it will actually work...
Thanks...
hitspot 05-24-2002, 10:51 PM Hi, The Thinker..
I believe this is the minimal DNS settings needed to run DNS on your raq (anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong).
Under Control Panel/DNS
-Click Add: Address (A) Record. Leave the hostname blank, enter yourdomain.com in the domain field and the IP you wish to place the domain on.
-Click Add: Address A Record Again. Enter www in the host, the yourdomain.com in the domain field, and the IP again.
-Then click Add: Mail Server Mx record. Leave the hostname blank, yourdomain.com in the domain field, and www.yourdomain.com in the mail server name field.
-Lastly, if this is the 1st time/1st domain you are using this IP on, click Add: Reverse Address (PTR) Record. Enter the IP, and yourdomain.com in the domain field (leave hostname blank).
All future domains you setup on this IP do not require a PTR record, just do the first 3 steps.
For setting up extra nameservers (for reseller clients, for example), just use the instructions above for setting up each nameserver and insure you create a virtual site on each IP for each reseller nameserver.
You will read different DNS suggestions, as many people do different DNS configurations (such as backup email servers, etc), but the above is the most basic I believe.
Good luck,
David Kiley
hitspot 05-24-2002, 10:53 PM Also, insure that you "Register" each nameserver and corresponding IP with your domain register. Most have an online control panel for registering nameserver hostnames. This is different than just adding the DNS nameserver in individual domain records, you actually have to add your nameservers to the global nameserver database before they can be added and work with individual domain records.
The Thinker 05-24-2002, 11:21 PM I did that yesterday morning with Dotster (that's who we have always used)
ns1.computicaservers.com 207.195.74.11
ns2.computicaservers.com 207.195.74.12
I also registered computica.net and used the above two name servers as the DNS......so if anyone sees something working before I do, please let me know...
I think the problems may be that I am just too impatient and haven't waited long enough for everything to propagate throughout the Internet............
That, plus waiting for our ISP to stick the PTR's in......
Oh well............these are our first RaQ's....live and learn.....
Give me a white box, running in 15 minutes, fully functional. Give me a Cobalt, running in 15 minutes, but 5 hours later, still trying to figure out how virtual DNS works through the control panel....
Thanks for the help everyone.....
