View Full Version : Why I will never use VBulletin EVER again!
dynawebd 05-13-2006, 09:42 PM Sometimes having a good product just isn't enough. You gotta back it up with excellent support. Why will I never use VBulletin EVER again? This ticket dialog pretty much says it all.

namelayer 05-13-2006, 09:50 PM So your upset because of vb's security precautions?
Amdac 05-13-2006, 10:13 PM I don't quite see the problem. It's up to the previous owner to transfer the license to you and it's up to you to make sure it has been transferred. That's part of the sale. The vB staff can't just transfer it to your name because you email them saying it's yours, there are procedures to prevent theft of licenses. You should be blaming the previous owner, not vBulletin.
If anything, this helps me sleep better at night knowing Jelsoft is taking good care of my license. :gthumb:

No, of course not. Are you saying you agree with the way they handled the support request?
namelayer 05-13-2006, 11:24 PM No, of course not. Are you saying you agree with the way they handled the support request?
I highly agree with what they did. I wouldnt want to see my licenses transfered away without my consent as mentioned above.
namelayer 05-13-2006, 11:28 PM Wait a sec, do you own linuxboards.org?
Amdac 05-13-2006, 11:44 PM No, of course not. Are you saying you agree with the way they handled the support request?
What would you except them to do? Hand the license over based on your word? It's the previous owner that screwed you by not updating the license information and giving you full rights. This is not the fault of Jelsoft.
dynawebd 05-14-2006, 12:32 AM I highly agree with what they did. I wouldnt want to see my licenses transfered away without my consent as mentioned above.
I never asked them to transfer the license (although it already was transferred to me a year ago when I bought LBO), so I never requested them to do anything that is insecure. I have been using their management area for the last year and have used it to log in on multiple occasions to download updates for the site, etc.. In Feb, I upgraded the license from leased to owned. My guess is that when I did this the information got reverted (hey, stranger things have happenned with servers and databases and all). I expressed all of this into the ticket kindly and clearly. I gave them all my information including all my personal information, the site information, and the purchase receipt with the purchase order number, date, and all other relavent information. I answered all of their questions clearly (except for the last one sinc ethey told me I WAS WASTING THEIR TIME and implying that I have never paid or ever given them the payment information).
I believe that insted of disrepecting their good, paying customers, thy could have gone a different route like...
"Sir, I understand your position but our policy requires that license owners reply to our requests for transfer in order to transfer ownership of a license to another person. I also understand from your post that you believe there has been some sort of error with the customer management system that reverted information back to that of the previous owner. Although we have no way to conform that, we do believe there was a mistake made somewhere and we are here to help you resolve the issue. If for some reason the contact email we have on record for this account does not respond, we can go about applying your payment to a new account that we set up for you (of course we would need to collect a little more information from you to do this); or you could reverse the charge through your credit card company and then enroll for a new account yourself. There may also be other ways to resolve this issue for you. Perhaps we can understand the problem better by speaking on the phone with you. In any event we are sorry that you are experiencing this but we are here to assist you with a resolution."
I think something along that path would have been much more appropriate than threatening not to reply to emails, not acting at all concerned, not believing a word I said, and telling me I was wasting their time and stop replying to the ticket.
When I called in for help they said I had to call back later. Then I called in later and they told me I had to go through the support ticket(s) which were just looping me in to simultanious loops.
Also, they had another support person resurrect a ticket from a year ago (don't ask me why?) and was working me through the same rigamorole but on an old ticket for some reason. When I asked him why he re-opened the old, unrelated ticket while the issue at hand was being handled through the current ticket, he told me...
"I am not 'insisting' on multiple tickets. I am responding to this ticket which *you* every time you answer it. If you don't want me to respond to this ticket, then the solution is simple. Stop replying to it. :)
As for refunding your money - you never paid us any money so there's nothing to refund. You had a third-party deal wih someone else and we are not responsible for that deal."
Bad, bad, bad bad bad.

Got your PM. Yes, I am Dave the guy who created linuxboards.org And have since sold to somebody then that somebody sold to you. Sad to say that the first somebody bought the site just to use to skin and then sold to you. There is nothing I can possibly do to help you on this. All I can say is good luck, vB does have their security precautions and I dont think they will bend any rules to transfer a license. I would try to get with the owner prior to you or try to get that email back that was used when the first transfer took place.
Shaliza 05-16-2006, 12:50 AM I used to use phpBB, but vBulletin blows it out of the water.
One of the things I love about it is how it has most of the functions that some other boards have as hacks in there already, especially the subscriptions one.
ryan1918 05-17-2006, 01:50 AM I love phpbb, opensource the way to go!
robert1970 05-17-2006, 02:26 AM phpbb is great, but it really does not offer all the functionality of vbulletin.
ryan1918 05-17-2006, 12:31 PM wait until phpbb3 comes out it will have almost every feature vb has, should be out this month..
Amdac 05-17-2006, 03:54 PM And I bet you guys have never even seen the admin side of vB. PhpBB doesn't even come close nor does it match the security.
Amdac 05-17-2006, 03:55 PM I love phpbb, opensource the way to go!
Umm, vB is open source too.
Shaliza 05-17-2006, 10:57 PM Say what? You have to pay for vBulletin. It's not open source.
And open source definitely is not always the way to go. Sometimes you have to cough up money if you want something good & SECURE.
VB is the WMD compared to all the other cheap forums out there! I say VB is one of the worlds best online community forum provider!

I dont know about you but I can clearly see the source code in vB. GNU/GPL is a whole nother ballpark if thats what you mean. :)
anon-e-mouse 05-18-2006, 01:55 AM As the OP's complaint has nothing to do with vBulletin, but the person he purchased the site off, this thread is closed. If you want to contact us at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/helpdesk/ with the details of of the person who sold it to you, we would be most grateful :)
