Dear all,

I purchased a domain name together with a web space from a hosting company. Now the company seems to go bankruptcy, and I cannot log into the control panel, my site and even their company website. I am so worried, as I have been devoted in the web construction, and now I am many customers and members. I have now got another web space from a big company, and want to point the DNS of my site to this new hosting company. But it seems that I can only change the DNS settings from my current server, which has already dispeared. Does anybody can give me any suggestions on what I should do to change DNS pointing and get my data back? Thanks in advance.

Cynthia

Cynthia, I am very sorry to hear your story. The common knowledge on these boards is that you should buy domains from registrars and hosting from hosting companies. If you mix one with another, you're usually looking for the BIG trouble. Unfortunately, your experience is not the first and not the last...

Now it looks like it's too late... What I can tell/suggest you is:

- contact the true registrar (hosting company was most probably reseller of one);
- request them to give you control over the domain;
- prepare all your paperwork - invoices from the hosting company for the domain, your ID, latest WHOIS output with your details present, etc etc etc - literally ANYTHING that will help you to prove that's YOU who owns the domain;
- be quick in doing this, because if the domain will expire, you'll be out of luck, TOTALLY.

I just want to wish you all the best...

Most registrars allow you to route around dead resellers/hosting co's, to reclaim a name PROVIDED it is registered in your name rather than the hosting company's.

Difficult to be of further help without knowing the actual domain name involved.

Thank you so much for your useful info! You are so kind and helpful.
I will try to contact the true registar, and I've already found who they are. And another thing confusing me is that: Can I change the domain registar without making changes through my current registar and only with my prospect registar? Or as DNS setting, need to change at my current registar? Thanks in advance.

You can transfer the domain not caring much about the losing registrar (provided the domain is unlocked and you're in control over the admin contact email). You just start the transfer from the gaining registrar's control panel.

Most of them also give you the choice of either leaving all previous data intact or to change it to your account's defaults upon successfull transfer.

Probably referring to the OP's website data. But at least the domain name was
recovered.

Cynthia. Stan always gives knowledgeable, helpful advice. What did you mean exactly by "I got the domain"

Do you have a phone number for the hosting company? Is anyone still answering? You might try to ask them if they have a backup of your website which they could let you have.
