How many of you have joined a "business networking group" to gain clients?

I've joined a 'startup' networking group since last year and so far, I've had moderate success in gaining new clients. The hardest part is describing what "web hosting" is to other businesses and how they can refer the right type of clients to you. Most think 'web hosting' and 'web design' are the same thing. This is one of the challenges. I close deals on 50% of my referrals given out by my networking group, which I say isn't too bad, but obviously, I like to get this percentage higher.

Anyone else have much experience in being in a networking group?

One of the companies I run is a marketing company. Closing 50%, even on referrrals is an excellent rate of close. Anything over about 25% is better than one normally expects.

In terms of networking groups, there's no (to my knowledge) 'best networking' out there. There are both local and online networking groups. Personally, I like Linkedin (www.linkedin.com) as an online networking group, but I haven't really found it to be that good in terms of gaining business or relating that way. Its a better way to manage and get a hold of large companies that you may not have had an 'in' with earlier.

We make use of local business networking groups. All our referrals are a 100% close. You should ask your group for advice on how best to present your business to them. Try using analogies and real world examples.
