hi,
my current host, who by the way is doing a bang-up job, uses cpanel. because of this, i'm blocked by our corporate firewall from accessing webmail.

one accesses email with my host by either going to www.domainname.com:2095 or by going to www.domainname.com/email which redirects to the 2095 port.

i NEED my webmail. we use groupwise at my office so pop connections are out of the question. this is for my home business
on the side.

i've tried install uiebmau (sp?) mail, but the host uninstalled it mail because it was causing problems with their systems.

i am considering switching hosts, which is a shame because they have given me nothing but the best of treatment and service. i am looking at a couple that replied to my post who are either using plesk or some other device of their own creation.

will any of these cause similar problems?

i need to access webmail via the usual port: 80 and i don't know enough to understand the port redirects that some hosts are claiming to use, not how to write a script to do this for me.

btw..those of you looking for a host who don't have my needs, check out exa-byte.com. they've been very good to me and have tried to accomodate me but to no avail thus far.

Yahoo or Hotmail? Then set them up to check your POP3 account. Should get you around the firewall and that way you don't have to find a new host or change anything.

hi,
thanks but that's what i'm doing now. i'm paying some (not a ton) of money so i don't think i should have to settle or come up with a work-around. true?

i mean my bandwidth alone is under a gb a month and i have four (4) gb to use.

i'm a very good customer. i know anyone would say that but it's true.

and i don't think that i'm asking for all that much...or am i?

that way or you could look at it that you are paying for hosting which you are being provided and in your own words very well taken care of. How is it your hosts fault that your firewall at work will not allow you to access your web mail?

Dunno I always considered the hosting the main thing the web mail was just an extra service.

Seems to me that is a perfectly reasonable work around, you use Yahoo to check your mail from work leave it on server so when you get home it is downloaded to your outlook or use the Neomail from home. All the Yahoo does is allow you to check during the day while you are at work.

But hey if you want to take a chance on getting a host that may not be as good as the one you have now and give up all the extras you get with cpanel, scripts etc. Just because you don't want to use a work around, that is your choice. Just thought I would offer you a suggestion to help.

hi again,

well...you do raise some valid points that i've thought about...very hard too. maybe too hard. i mean my gosh...it's a personal site with some biz stuff in it.

i dunno...i'll think about it. i've got a yahoo account but i just think that it looks so unprofessional to read someone's email and reply with a yahoo address and that infernal yahoo add-on post tag on the bottom.

but maybe that's just me. thanks!

btw...do you know what people are talking about when they tell me to write a webscript to view and reply to emails? i can do the reply with php but am not clear on the receive/read.

know of any resources that i can tap?

thanks again!
john

Can't you set up Outlook Express to check your mail via POP3? You can always uncheck "Remove messages from server" so that the messages will still be there when you get home. This is what I used to do before I started taking my laptop to work.

It is rare, but some hosting services offer IMAP4. If this is the case, then you could connect to your inbox from any IMAP4 client (e.g. Outlook Express or Outlook XP) without removing the messages from the server as well.

This might work. Install nph-proxy: http://www.jmarshall.com/tools/cgiproxy/

Installing it is a two-step process, so don’t worry about that. While I have yet to test this out behind a firewall, I have it running on a server, and have access to all services/ports on a Cpanel host. It essentially proxies everything through port 80.

Now, whether or not this will work from behind a firewall, I’m not sure, but it very well could. Install NPH-proxy on your Cpanel account. Call NPH-proxy from your site at work— In case you didn’t know, it’s a basic CGI script, which is called via http. The interface will allow you to enter in a URL, which will be proxied through your web hosting account. It’s very similar to anonomizer, or other anonymous web surfing interfaces, except it runs on 'your' server.

Let me know if it works or not.
